Warm, dry weather, fewer crowds and Thailand's liveliest festival

From March through May, Thailand offers a blend of warm temperatures and vibrant festivals as well as advantages that come with exploring outside the peak tourist season.

During spring, travellers can enjoy a mix of experiences from the bustling streets of Bangkok to the serene beaches of the islands.

Although the daytime temperatures start to soar by late March, the weather is dry throughout most of the country ensuring travellers can enjoy the rich culture, stunning landscapes and warm hospitality Thailand is known for.

And, with the peak season wrapped up by mid-March, spring travellers will have their pick of preferred properties and fewer crowds

This season also coincides with Songkran, Thailand’s most colourful festival, providing travellers with an authentic glimpse of the country’s heritage and culture.

 Weather

Spring is warm and dry in most of Thailand.

After the cool winter temperatures at the start of the year, by March the heat has returned, with temperatures soaring to over 40°C (100°F) in some regions. However, rain is rare during the spring months, keeping humidity low.

Northern Thailand undergoes its agricultural burning season in the spring. This practice can lead to fluctuations in air quality, occasionally dropping to levels that may be considered unhealthy for individuals with respiratory problems. While some days offer clear, blue skies, others are marked by a haze that affects visibility and air purity.

It is important to understand that these conditions are limited to the northern regions and the air quality fluctuates during this season. Therefore, EXO does not discourage travel during this period. For the comfort and safety of our travellers venturing outdoors, we provide N-95 masks to mitigate any potential discomfort caused by the air quality.

 Spring highlights

Thanks to the dry weather, spring is a great time to explore the diversity of Thailand’s landscapes

No trip to Thailand would be complete without a few days in Bangkok, the vibrant capital. From there, travellers can continue to the north to the mountainous areas of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai where a plethora of heritage sites stand in harmony with rich nature, trekking trails and diverse cultural villages.

The perfect end to a spring Thailand trip is a few days on the beach. Due to the seasonality in the Thai south, the spring months are best spent on Thailand’s east coast where islands like Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are dry and sunny.

Spring is also the best time to sample Thailand’s incredible array of tropical fruits. During these months, mango, mangosteen, rambutan and more are in season plus other favourites like papaya, coconut and banana. These exotic fruits- on their own or blended into a fruit shake- are the perfect way to cool off from the springtime heat.

Festivals

Spring also heralds the arrival of Thailand’s most celebrated festival: Songkran. The Thai New Year transforms the country into a bustling, water-soaked playground, offering a refreshing respite from the heat and a chance to partake in one of Thailand’s most cherished traditions.

Travellers can immerse themselves in vibrant street parties, where locals and visitors alike engage in friendly water fights, symbolising the washing away of bad luck and misfortunes from the past year.

Besides the exhilarating water battles, Songkran also offers a unique opportunity to experience Thai culture through traditional ceremonies, such as the pouring of water on Buddha statues and the hands of elders, a gesture that shows respect and wishes for prosperity and health.

Thailand is a wonderful year-round destination, with each season offering distinct highlights.  With an incredible range of places and experiences to chose from, there is something for everyone, every month of the year.
