Swim, Eat, Walk, Relax – It’s all possible at Kuang Si Falls, Laos

As you may know, Southeast Asia can get pretty balmy, especially in the afternoons. Laos is no exception.

As you may know, Southeast Asia can get pretty balmy, especially in the afternoons. Laos is no exception. The country may be landlocked, but there are still tons of aquatic options available in Laos. The country is made up of rivers. And with rivers, waterfalls are sure to be around somewhere, right? Say hello to Kuang Si Falls, Laos’ most impressive waterfall. If Laos is still not laid back enough for you, then the cascading waters, blue/green pools and serene environment of Kuang Si will certainly do the trick.

Laos’ most striking cascades lie just 30 kilometers south of Luang Prabang. For many, it is a favorite side trip and it is easy to see why. The waterfall drops majestically and with authority over various limestone formations and into inviting and equally impressive turquoise pools. Thick vegetation and flora adds to the finishing touches towards a picture perfect scene.

Of course, with Exotissimo, you get more than what you bargain for. En-route to this natural wonder, we will take you to a small hilltribe village. This is an interesting stop because you will see and experience firsthand how these incredible people live. Much of their culture, heritage and way of life have remained unchanged for centuries, despite the rapid spread of modernization.

Upon reaching the falls, just relax and enjoy the serene environment. Feel free to swim in the aforementioned pools. They certainly have some of the most amazing blue/green colored waters you’ll see. For the adventurous, it is possible to walk to the top of the falls via a steep track where stunning views await you at the top. Kuang Si Falls is also a great place for a picnic. Bring your own eats or pick up some coal-grilled Lao food nearby for a sample of Kuang Si taste. Shelters and tables are available underneath a shade and near the falls.

But wait, that’s not all folks. One your way back to Luang Prabang, you will get additional insight into Laos’ ethnic hilltribe groups and their traditional arts and crafts at the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Center. This visit will certainly enhance your understanding of this little-known country and its people (NOTE: the center is closed on Monday).
