Laos’ natural beauty is unprecedented, with rivers over there, limestone karsts over here and lush tropical jungles decorating the scenery. Introducing one of these wonders, Kong Lor Caves. Just three hours from Vientiane lays the spectacular natural piece, carved out by the Hinboun River over thousands of years. If you are an avid outdoorsman, then what are you waiting for!? Let’s head out there!

First some pointers. You will get wet, especially your feet. Shoes and socks might just not be the right type of footwear for you. Maybe some waterproof boots or slippers. If you decide on slippers, make sure it is attached to your feet by a piece of rope or string. The current may take your slippers away. Barefoot is certainly not advisable as sharp formations may leave cuts and painful bruises on your feet. If you got a flashlight, feel free to bring it along.

Alright, now that we got the essentials down, let’s make our way there. From Vientiane, head over to Sala Hinboun, a small traditional village town on the banks of the Hinboun River and surrounded by lime stone karsts. Not a bad place to get you acquainted with what’s to come in Kong Lor Caves, isn’t it?

Just to let you know: the caves are only reachable by boat. That means that you will slice through the area on a peaceful boat ride and be treated to some spectacular views. After that, enter Kong Lor Caves. The cavern is a seven and a half kilometer long subterranean limestone tunnel network and can be anywhere between 30 and 90 meters wide and about 100 meters high.

Inside the caverns are beautiful stalactites formations and other cool cave-like features. And if seeing them isn’t enough, you’ll actually be having a picnic lunch amongst these natural wonders. Then, go on ahead and explore the surrounding area. If you’re feeling warm and yearning for a swim, then by all means go ahead and jump in the refreshing Hinboun River. After your experience here, head back to Sala Hinboun for some downtime.

See what else Laos has to offer. Be warned, you may find it hard to leave the country.
