You may have heard the word Indochina floating around here and there. Different people have different interpretations of its meaning and geography. We’ll give you the lowdown on two different versions of Indochina for you.
Some people consider the entire mainland Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and to an extent Singapore) as Indochina. Why? Well, these countries have cultural influences from both China and India. So for some, why not call it Indochina (notice the word India and China in Indochina) instead of Mainland Southeast Asia for simplicity’s sake.
The more strict definition of Indochina is Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Why these three countries? All were once a part of French Indochina in the late 1800’s and early to mid 1900’s. The French colonial legacy still stands in these countries today, and in some places, European architecture exists harmoniously with the local buildings and structures. A fine sight indeed.
So, you are confused, right? What is Indochina? What do we consider to be Indochina? Check the itinerary in our Indochina Heritage Road tour. There you will find the answer.
