Gallop and Pedal Cambodia’s Soothing, Warm and Pristine Countryside, just outside of Siem Reap

Siem Reap, home to the amazing temples of Angkor. The highlight of your trip to Cambodia.

Siem Reap, home to the amazing temples of Angkor. The highlight of your trip to Cambodia. The structures have stood the test of time, presenting its intricate bas reliefs, wonderful architectural designs and grand stature for all to see, hundreds of years after the fall of the empire. But there’s more. Just outside the town is a whole wide world of Cambodian countryside scenery, one you will explore on both horseback and on bicycle, the perfect travel methods to fully embrace and experience the country’s rural side.

Yeeha, let’s go cowboy. Well, it’s not exactly the Wild West, but the Happy Ranch just outside Siem Reap is the only western style one in the country. The horses though are domestic. They are of pure Cambodian breed, a descendant of the wild horses in Mongolia (perhaps your horse may be related to Genghis Khan’s?). Get to know your animal before you giddy yap your way to the Cambodian countryside.

During the 2-hour trail ride you will get to places far outside the tourist area, through the rice fields and local villages. You will also encounter a rarely visited Angkor temple, Wat Atvea. Have you noticed the difference between this one and the ones you’ve toured back at Angkor Archaeological Park? There is much less people here! You are practically free to roam the area at your own discretion; plus you also have the luxury of riding your horse wherever you want around the complex. This is quite a peaceful and authentic temple touring experience. Return to the Happy Ranch on horseback through small, quiet paths and enjoy lunch in a local community.

This afternoon, trade in your horse for a bicycle as you ride towards the floating village of Chhong Kneas. Your cycling experience is quite scenic, pedaling along the Siem Reap River. It is here that the countryside scenery comes alive, with scenes of lush green paddy rice fields, stilt houses and typical rural villages. The folks are also warm and friendly, greeting and smiling at you as they do their best to make your experience even warmer. After a 10 kilometer loop around the river, return to the Happy Ranch and transfer to Siem Reap mid-afternoon. This concludes your horse riding/cycling in the rurals.

If you happen to be in town via our Cambodia tours, why not extend your Siem Reap experience with this soothing day trip? Not only will you get to see a part of the country many fail to experience, you’ll also get your fair share of fresh air and exercise.
