Flores and Komodo National Park

Flores and Komodo National Park

We all know it’s getting a little harder to find truly authentic and untouched regions of Asia, yet in eastern Indonesia what exists is fertile, volcanic and mountainous islands, which contrast magnificently with clear turquoise seas home to a diverse and luxuriant coral reef.

The island of Flores, which means flower in Portuguese, is located between the Saru and Flores Sea. It is here where flights land from Bali. The most enticing attraction of the island, and what brings most travelers to Flores, is Mt Kelimutu, a soaring volcano with unique colored crater lakes, in aquamarine, ochre red and brow. It is possible to climb the volcano and see these natural wonders for yourself.

Flores also offers a plethora of varying cultures, religions and traditions making the area not only enticing for nature enthusiasts, but also those intrigued by the people. As many will know,  Indonesia is home to the world’s largest Muslim population, however Flores is an exception, with the majority of inhabitants being Roman Catholic.  A result of the island’s Portuguese ties, with many people on the island being of Portuguese descent. These people tend to live in the east of the island and are known as Roman Catholic Sikkas.

Neighboring Flores is Komodo National Park, which includes three islands; Rinca, Komodo, and Padar. Komodo National Park is deservedly on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List, believed to be of ‘Outstanding Universal Value’ and we certainly don’t disagree.

The three islands are of volcanic origin and are home to wild Komodo dragon, the largest and heaviest of the worlds lizard. It is here you’ll also find endemic rats, crab eating macaque and 72 species of birds. It’s a wildlife enthusiasts paradise. The coast and coral reef which fringes the islands is magnificent, here you’ll find five species of sea turtle, 10 species of dolphin, sperm whale and even blue whale.

Flores and Komodo National Park is undoubtedly one of Indonesia’s gems. To find out more take a look at our wonderful new tour ‘Spectacular Flores and Komodo’:
