EXO Thailand Becomes Third Country to Gain Travelife Certification

EXO Travel’s Thailand team are thrilled to have successfully been awarded the Travelife Certification which is the culmination of months of hard work and dedication.

The Travelife Certification recognises the efforts towards corporate, social, cultural and environmental responsibility. The accolade is in recognition for EXO Travel’s operations within Thailand and adds to previously achieved certifications for work in Vietnam and Cambodia.

The achievement was driven by the efforts of the EXO Foundation and the hard work of the Sustainability Coordinators in each of the respective destinations.

EXO Travel Thailand’s Sustainability Coordinator, Nia Klatte was thrilled with the news, “The Travelife certification is a wonderful achievement for us. It has been a very exciting process so far and it’s an excellent motivator for us to keep developing and improving in the future. We hope to set a positive example for others to follow on our journey to more sustainable tourism.”

Travelife is the leading international sustainability certification across the industry. Achieving certification requires compliance with a total of 247 criteria, among which 161 are compulsory measures, covering the entire company’s office management, supply chain, product range and customer information including environmental efforts, biodiversity, human rights and labour relations. It’s also in full compliance with the UN supported Global Sustainable Tourism Council criteria.

Worldwide, 20 national travel associations are promoting the scheme to their members, 90 companies have started the certification process and 39 companies have achieved certification, among which there are only four in Southeast Asia.

For EXO, this is a continuation of our commitment to becoming a truly sustainable company, and the focus now turns to the next destination for Travelife certification.

    The Giant Puppet Street Parade is a celebration of creativity and community. The annual event aims to encourage Cambodia’s youth to use their imagination and creative talents to enrich their lives.This year’s event was held on 24 February with the theme of dinosaurs.  Nine giant dinosaurs were paraded through the streets of Siem Reap by children and youth while more than 10,000 spectators cheered them on.  Music, performances and other creative activities added to the festive atmosphere.One of these giant puppets was supported by EXO, in combination with CAMDMC, a collective of DMCs working to support local, ethical events. The group contributed $2500 to provide the materials needed for the youth to build a giant Dilophosaurus dinosaur puppet.Marcel van der Zwaag, EXO Cambodia GM, explains, ‘It was amazing to see the community coming together for this event.     At EXO, we have always believed in travel as a force for good. This recently came to life through a meaningful project on Con Ho, a small island in the Mekong Delta.Home to only fifteen families, life on Con Ho is refreshingly simple: the residents get around on foot or by bicycle, the usual buzz of motorbikes is noticeably absent. There is no electricity, so the people rely on solar power and battery back-up. Despite the scarce resources, the people are incredibly welcoming. EXO has worked with the community to develop immersive visits, giving our guests a rare opportunity to experience rural Vietnamese life while also providing a much-needed additional income stream to the community.However this simple life comes with challenges. The island’s main road, which connects the village to the port, becomes impassable in the rainy season due to thick mud.  This hampers daily life, as the road is used by children to go to school, adults to go to the market and to access services such as medical care. Even in the low season period, the public holidays can lead to fully-booked trains, hotels and guide services. Should your guests’ travel dates overlap with these holidays- especially the April and end-of-year dates- we suggest booking early and allowing some flexibility with regards to the itinerary. Our team will help advise alternative routings to avoid the crowds and ensure a smooth, enjoyable holiday. Trains During public holidays and other peak travel periods, securing train tickets is very difficult. In accordance with local regulations, tickets may only be purchased 30 - 60 days in advance, with the exact booking window dependent on the route.     With the high season just around the corner, EXO Thailand gathered guides for training in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket.Led by EXO’s operations teams, the sessions covered a broad range of topics designed to be both informative and motivational. Nearly 300 guides attended over the course of 9 days. The agenda kicked off with a review of EXO policies, updates on EXO news and introduction of key team members before moving into more specific areas of focus. With her deep-seated knowledge of EXO’s workflow, clientele and products she was well positioned to share information about operations and procedures with our team of guides.
