Cambodia is a country with a rich and proud past. How do we know? Just check out the ruins over at Angkor. These structures are hundreds upon hundreds of years old, some having stood there for well over 1000 years. The good news is that many of these structures are still in good shape. Even better news is that you can see them in our Angkor Discovery tour.

No Angkor tour would be complete without a stop at Angkor Wat. This is truly a masterpiece, built in the 12th century originally as a Hindu temple but later as a Buddhist shrine. Witness history, because this is the world’s largest religious structure.

There’s more. Head east and check out the Rolous Group temples. The town itself is one of the first established by the kings of Cambodia and are home to some of the earliest structures built by the Khmer, some made of brick, others with sandstone.

Ta Phrom is also part of the agenda. What makes this temple so special? Well, it’s all covered in thick jungle trees and vines. In other words, it has been left they way explorers have found it. Which exudes a pretty cool atmosphere, making this one of the more popular sites to visit. Your stops will also include Banteay Kdei, a Buddhist monastery from the late 12th Century, and Srah Srang, also known as the ‘pool of ablutions’.

Meet one of the smallest temples in the region, Banteay Srey. The small size is offset by its beauty. It is built entirely of red sandstone which in turn results in one of the most beautiful and elaborate decorative wall carvings in all of Khmer architecture. On the way back to Siem Reap you will visit Banteay Samre, on the eastern edge of the Angkor complex and a local village to see the production of rice paper and palm wine. After lunch, spend some time with the kids at Sala Bai, a school training young Cambodians from poor family backgrounds in the principles of hospitality in order to give them a future.

Now explore the Tonle Sap. This is an interesting body of water because it is a river during the dry season and a lake during the raining season. The area is also rich in biodiversity and village life, which you will see and experience. Learn a little bit about Cambodia’s culture with a visit to Artisans D’Angkor or to one of Siem Reap’s bustling markets.
