Looking to experience a beautiful trek, in every sense of the word? Try trekking for orchids. Not only will you spend some valuable time outdoors, you will also familiarize yourself with Laos’s wilderness and of course come across some beautiful and colorful flowers. Our Orchids Trek is the perfect program for environmental and cultural awareness in the area as well as encouraging orchid preservation and conservation.
The tour is unique in that your guides are actually villagers in the area (hailing from Ban Hatkai Village, near Vientiane). The money from this tour directly goes back to the villagers and the development of the village. Additionally, part of the money helps maintain the walking trails and forest cleanliness.
The adventure will take place in Phou Khao Kway National Park, not too far from the Lao capital. The terrain is filled with waterfalls, rugged mountains, gorges, and sandstone cliffs. More than half of the country’s wild orchid species is here, along with a fascinating range of plant species. Likewise, Phou Khao Kway is home to a diverse animal population, including wild elephants.
To be honest, just trekking here by itself is already a sight to behold. The park is filled with all kinds of natural treasures. It is easy and almost tempting to just wander off. But, the task at hand is to check out some orchids. Your guides are experts of the park and will know where to go. Once there, you will be amazed again, this time at the vibrant colors and shapes of these elusive flowers.
Stop for a picnic lunch alongside a river bank. Soak in the tranquility of the area and keep an eye out for the beautiful butterfly species that flutter about.
Continue toward Tad Xay waterfall. The water cascades down seven levels and is a great place for swimming or a rest before ending your trek, past more orchids and back to Vientiane. Return to Vientiane around 5:30pm.
So, when is the best time of year to come? Some of these orchids bloom just once a year while others bloom every month. Your best bet is to come here from January to June. And if you are here during the rainy season (May and June), the tour will start off with a 30 minutes boat trip to Pha Xay Falls due to the higher water level.
