Discover the fascinating history and beauty of the former Royal capital of Vietnam on this full day tour. Walk through the grounds of the walled Imperial Citadel, visit tombs of former emperors, see an iconic Austin Martin and take a cyclo, a form of rickshaw unique to Vietnam.

 
Depart at 08:30 for the UNESCO-heritage listed Imperial Citadel. Roam the expansive grounds, hearing stories of the majestic buildings, including Kien Trung Palace, once the residence of Vietnam’s last emperors, which has been superbly renovated by the local conservation department in recent years.  

Continue by cyclo to a tranquil lake, where king’s once rested during the hot summer months, before arriving at a private museum featuring a magnificent collection of royal possessions.  

Continue to Thien Mu Pagoda, perhaps Hue’s most iconic landmark located along the beautifully named Perfume River. Apart from the spiritual aspect and sweeping view, the vintage vehicle on display offers an interesting story. 

Rest those feet over a local Hue inspired lunch. 
 
In the afternoon, leave the city behind and travel through Hue’s outskirts to the tomb of Emperor Minh Mang, a Nguyen Dynasty ruler known for his opposition to French occupation and his decadent lifestyle. Explore his remarkable tomb, admiring the imposing architecture and gorgeous forest setting while learning more on this historic figure.  

Continue to Emperor Khai Dinh’s tomb, which is equally impressive, yet a completely different complex. See the blend of traditional Vietnamese design with European influence, making it unique from other royal tombs in Hue. 

At the end of the afternoon, return to the hotel or next destination.

Look beyond the main tourist sites of Hue to discover the town’s historic garden houses. Follow in the footsteps of emperors while venturing through these serene havens and learn about the once-mighty Imperial Court. 

Today’s tour will begin at 08:30 with a transfer from the hotel.

Step through the main entrance of one of these remarkable  ‘nha vuon’ garden houses. Designed to create harmony between architecture and nature, each element of the nha vuon is a calculated design.  These brick walls rise in front of the house and symbolically protect the house’s main altar. The pathways are lined with tea bushes or apricot trees, and many other leafy plants fill the courtyards.

While exploring Hue’s garden houses, hear about their rich history. Initially built by the members of the Imperial Court, tradition holds that the houses cannot be sold and must be maintained by ancestors. 

Following this insightful glimpse into Hue’s traditions and heritage, return to the city centre or hotel.

Ride on the back of a vintage Vespa motorbike for an unforgettable Hue city experience. Cruise through the royal city streets learning about and sampling some of Hue’s favourite street food eats. Discover the historic Citadel’s evening transformation, experiencing a night out in Hue as a local!

This delicious Hue evening experience begins with a 17:30 pickup from the hotel in Hue by vintage Vespa motorbike. Once acquainted with your bike and driver, drive to the first stop for a refreshing drink at a bar located in the centre of Hue. 

Continue to a nearby local restaurant to sample some of the city’s favourite specialities such as Banh Beo, Banh Nam and other Banh Uot (literally wet cakes).  

Continue through the streets to the Imperial Citadel, draped in light. Take a short stroll around the grounds of the historic Citadel and the Flag Tower to see the transformation between night and day. See how food stalls and pop up games for children are set up to entertain the many locals who gather here on a nightly basis. Taste some delicious local ‘pizza’ banh trang accompanied by pork skewers. 

Ride around the Citadel and reach the centre of Hue to try the renowned ‘bun bo Hue’, the signature dish of the city. Top off this tasty evening discovery with a delicious local dessert in a small backstreet, before returning to the hotel around 21:30.
