Take a two-wheeled, family-friendly adventure through Central Vietnam. Follow the historic trails of Hue, exploring monuments from once-mighty dynasties and farming villages untouched by time. Cruise along the scenic coast to reach charming Hoi An and the ancient ruins of My Son.

Itinerary

📍 Cycling distance up to: 30km Difficulty: Easy

The cycling tour begins in Hue, one of the most beautiful cities in Vietnam, which served as the political capital from 1802 to 1945 under the Nguyen Dynasty. To this day the city remains one of Vietnam's most important cultural, religious, and educational centers, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 1993.

Today the cycle begins with a departure from the hotel, exploring some of Hue’s most important cultural sites. The first stop is at the Imperial Citadel, which is modelled after the Forbidden City in China. While much of this site was destroyed during the ‘Tet Offensive’, it is still possible to gain insights into how the Royal family lived in the peak of their rule. After exploring the ruins, take a cruise along the Perfume River to Thien Mu pagoda. Continue from the pagoda to Ming Mang mausoleum, making a loop across the perfume river to Hue via the mausoleum of Khai Dinh.

Today the cycle heads out in a countryside loop along back roads to visit the traditional village of Phuoc Tich.

Passing through many untouched villages and local markets, we'll come across a Catholic village, an incense making village, and also a village where they make bamboo into many useful items.

A highlight of Phuoc Tich are the many homes that date back 200 years and follow traditional feng shui designs.

Visit a traditional house and spend some time learning about the history of the village. In the afternoon, transfer back to Hue. Dinner can be had independently (at own expense.)

📍 Transfer from Hotel in Hue to Hoi an: 3hrs Cycling distance for short option: 20km Cycling distance for long option: 35 km (adds an additional 15 km in Hoian) Difficulty: Easy

Today the cycle departs Hue for Hoi An, a well-preserved major Asian trading port of the 17th and 18th centuries whose architecture and relaxed lifestyle has changed little over the years. The scenic route passes through the wonderfully photogenic fishing village of Lang Co before climbing over the “Pass of Ocean Clouds.”

Continuing on through the city of Danang, there’s a short break planned for a visit to the Cham Museum, which contains the finest collection of Cham sculptures in the world. After reaching Hoi An and taking a short break, hop on a bicycle in the afternoon for a country loop around town. Starting from Hoi An city centre, ride through an array of back roads in peaceful villages with lots of vegetable farms. Stop at a pagoda, enjoy a cup of tea, and have a conversation with the monks (subject to availability). Alternatively, join the farmers nearby in preparing the land and fertilizing it with seaweed.

Continue by crossing into Cam Thanh islet, discovering how locals turn coconut leaves into roofing for houses. Keep cycling along the Thu Bon River and seize the opportunity to paddle in a local basket boat before arriving at a fishing village. Settle down beside a water coconut palm plantation and watch the sun setting over the horizon.

After breakfast, transfer out of town to begin the cycle south to the My Son Sanctuary. The ride is arguably one of the best of the trip, cruising along scenic country roads surrounded by rice paddies, through eucalyptus forest, and passing many scenic villages. The road climbs away from the coast and provides some amazing panoramas from the nearby mountain top.

Riding along, the road cuts through a gorge to the lush jungle alongside the Song Tranh River. After a short while longer, we arrive to My Son, which was once the Champa Kingdom’s religious centre. Although many of the temples were destroyed during the war, the remaining structures are still extremely impressive.

Before entering the complex, enjoy a local lunch. Following the afternoon visit, transfer back by bus to Hoi An. Spend  the rest of the day wandering around and enjoying the charm of Hoi An’s old town or relax at the hotel.
