Head to southern Myanmar for an alternative travel experience. Visit Myeik’s port and discover the challenging fishing (and pearl) trades. Tour Dome Island and its stunning waterfalls before spending the afternoon with Moken sea gypsies. Enjoy picturesque day trips to nearby islands with an optional colonial trading post visit.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at the airport, transfer to the hotel for check-in.

Afterwards, explore Myeik, one of the oldest port cities in Myanmar. As early as the 17th century, the East Indian Trading Company was using Myeik to unload their ships. Most of the goods would go inland to Tanintharyi and further on to the old capital of Siam, Ayutthaya. Today, Beik as the locals call it, is a major player in the fishing industry.

Begin the tour by visiting a soft shell crab and lobster farm to learn about the fishing industry. Then, stroll through the old colonial quarter and visit the Royal Pearl trading shop, owned by the same family for over 150 years. Learn about the difficulties of cultivating pearls and the challenges facing the industry today.

Enjoy lunch at a traditional fried rice noodle shop, where Myeik all-time favorite food Ket Kyay Kite is made.

After lunch, visit one of the bird nest-houses and learn about the widely used industry which is harvesting of bird nest.

As the sun begins to set, head to Thein Daw Gyi Pagoda for spectacular views of the Mergui Archipelago.

Today the sightseeing begins at 07:30.

Make an early start for Myeik’s Seik Nge Jetty to board a 1.5 hour cruise to Dome Island. Feel the fresh sea breeze while passing beautiful mangrove forests. Observe locals catching fish, crab, mussels and oysters in the tiny villages lining the coast.

The first stop will be Dome Waterfall, which cascades down right into the ocean. Feel free to take a dip in the refreshing waters. (Please be careful when walking on the slippery rocks and respect the fishing boat which may be refilling their fresh water supplies nearby.)

Enjoy a seafood and vegetarian lunch at Dome Nyaung Mine Village. Populated by the Moken people, also known as sea gypsies, the village lifestyle is reminiscent of a simpler time. Many spend their lives permanently at sea during the dry season, only seeking the shelter of land when the heavy rain arrives.

After lunch, cruise on to Smart Island for swimming and snorkelling in pristine waters. Also known as Parpant Kyun among locals, the island has two different beaches which make it unique and popular. While one beach is full of white sand and crystal clear water, another one has no sand and full of colorful gravels. The two beaches are within 5-10 minutes walking distance by passing through the small jungle.

Relax at the island until a few hours before sunset, transfer back to Myeik.
