A unique responsible holiday experience in Borneo Rainforest for adventurous families and animal lovers. The project is located on the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, home to singing gibbons, orangutans, proboscis monkeys, sun bears, hornbills, and the pygmy elephant as well as a host of other rarely seen wildlife. Help with habitat restoration planting trees and maintaining planting sites, which are vital for orangutans and pygmy elephants. Stay in the village located on the sanctuary and visit the homes of the gentle Orang Sungai or 'People of the River'.Β  At the end of your trip, walk through the Rainforest Discovery Centre to reinforce what you have learned about Borneo Rainforest and visit Sepilok Orangutan conservation center to learn about the challenges of orangutan rehabilitation.

After breakfast in the morning transfer by land to the project site in Sukau.

Upon arrival, have a short orientation followed by health and safety talk.

The project at Sukau involves wildlife observation. Habitat restoration work involves tree-planting and maintenance activities at high priority areas. These are crucial in connecting fragmented forest in the area to encourage healthy orang-utan and pygmy elephant populations. Community and Education projects involve interaction with the villagers and the students of the village school.

πŸ“ Sukau to Sepilok (110km) 2 hours Sepilok to Sandakan (25km) 40 min

After breakfast leave for Sepilok.

On arrival explore the Rainforest Discovery Center. Aside from the Plant Discovery Walk, which features information about the medicinal and traditional use of herbs and leaves, there is a 347-meter-long 87-meter-high canopy walkway. Nestled high amongst the rainforest tree line, this provides a great opportunity to spot 250-300 bird species and maybe even a wild orang-utan.

Leave for Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in time for the afternoon feeding session at 15:00 then head to the Sun Bear Conservation Centre nearby. This centre aims to increase awareness of this endearing, but little-known bear species – named after the crescent shaped patch of fur on their chests that resembles the rising sun. 

Return to your hotel.
