Escape to Selingan Island to help preserve Malaysia’s turtle population. Only Selingan is open to visitors and the island is accessed via a 1-hour speedboat ride from Sandakan.  Selingan Island hosts one of the oldest turtle hatcheries in the world and is one of South East Asia's most important nesting beaches and breeding ground for the Green Turtle and Hawksbill Turtle.  As all 'action' (turtle activities) takes place during the night, during the day visitors may laze around the white sandy shores or go scuba diving, snorkeling, and immerse with the marvelous marine life that reign the underwater world. Visit orangutan and sun bear conservation centers at the end of your trip.

Itinerary

📍 Boat from jetty to Selingan Island: 60 minutes

*It is suggested to arrive at Sandakan Airport before 9am to catch the boat into Selingan Island. 

Upon arrival at Sandakan Airport, our driver will assist you for a transfer to CQ Jetty where you will embark on a 1-hour journey by motorized boat to Selingan Turtle Island. 

Land on the island’s beach for check-in and enjoy lunch at the cafeteria. After lunch, grab snorkeling gear and heading to the beach. The beach is home to a variety of juvenile marine life, which you can observe while snorkeling or you can choose to simply relax and sunbathe on the beach.  Beach will be closed at 17:00 daily in order not to disturb the turtles that come ashore.

After dinner, standby at the cafeteria. Wait for Park Ranger’s signal before proceed in a small group to the egg-laying site to witness the mother turtle laying eggs, transferring of eggs to the hatchery and releasing hatchlings to the sea. Stay overnight at Selingan Island Chalet. The Parks Exhibition Hall will be open at 18:30 and video presentations will start at 19:00 before dinner.

19:30-20:00 Dinner at the cafeteria.

After dinner, please wait at the cafeteria for the Park Ranger's signal before proceeding in a small group to the egg-laying site to witness the mother turtle laying eggs. Follow the Parks Ranger to the nesting side and witness the egg laying process, collecting of eggs and the tagging of the mother turtle. Then, witness the planting of turtle eggs in the hatchery. The last program of the night is to watch the baby turtles being released to the sea for the first time.

📍 Boat from Selingan Island to jetty: 60 minutes Depart Selingan: 07:00 Arrive Sandakan Jetty: 08:00 Sandakan Jetty to Sepilok (20km): 40 mins Sepilok to Sandakan Airport (17km): 30 mins

06:00 hrs Wake up early in the morning and enjoy early breakfast at the cafeteria at 06:30. By 07:00 hrs, depart from Selingan Island and return to the mainland. Estimated arrival time at the jetty is at about 08:00 hrs. 

Proceed for a Sepilok Tour. Visit the outstanding Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where guests have the opportunity to observe these stunning animals. There are currently 36 bears housed at the center, which have been rescued from poachers. Guests also have the opportunity to adopt a bear to ensure the programs- and the animals – survival (at guests’ own expense).
 
Continue to visit the world’s largest orangutan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok. At the centre, guests can witness the orangutans being fed by the rangers. Please note the feeding times are very popular, so expect crowds at the platforms. Stroll the jungle-flanked wooden walkways to the central platform; orangutans can sometimes be seen from these platforms, so guests should have their cameras ready! (Viewing/Feeding times: 10:00 & 15:00)

After the tour, transfer to Sandakan Airport for your onward flight.
