Orou Sapulot Community Adventure

📍 Kota Kinabalu to Keningau (110km): 2 hours Keningau to Labang Village by 4x4 vehicle: 2 hours Labang Village to Pungiton Camp by wooden boat: 10mins Jungle and Cave Trek: 2 hrs round trip

At 07:30 be picked-up at the Kota Kinabalu hotel for a two-hour transfer by private air-conditioned vehicle to Keningau. In Keningau jump in a 4WD vehicle for the onward transfer to Labang Village in Sapulot. Sapulot is Sabah’s best kept secret and is perfect for discovering local life, villages, nature and culture. 

Learn how the Murut tribe people are adjusting to sustainable living. Once headhunters the Murut people are now transitioning from their livelihoods as hunter and gatherers to agriculture and farming methods to utilise their land.

At 13:00 depart from Labang Village and take a short walk to the river bank. Jump in a small wooden longboat to ride 10 mins downstream to Pungiton Camp. (Please Note: Suitcases are not suitable for this program and Luggage should be packed light and with waterproof Protection as there is no shelter on the boat if it rains).

On arrival into camp be assigned a stretcher bed and settle in before enjoying a delicious lunch. 

This afternoon will be a 30-minute jungle walk to the Pungiton Caves, walk through the river in the cave and wonder at the formation of stalactite and stalagmite. Return to the camp for a refreshing swim by the river.

18:00 Freshen up and dinner as night falls and the sound of the jungle takes over. 

Overnight at Pungiton Camp 

Please Note: Sleeping arrangements are Dormitory style sleeping on stretcher hammocks with Mosquito Net. Open Jungle environment so will night times will be noisy in the natural jungle environment.

📍 Pungiton Camp to Labang Village by wooden boat: 15mins Labang Village to Tataluan by land transport: 15mins Tataluan to Batu Punggul by wooden boat: 15mins Tataluan to Romol Village by land transport: 1 hour

Start the day early with breakfast before departing upstream by boat to Labang Village to pick up a 4WD to Tataluan Village. From here jump in a wooden longtail boat for a cruise up stream to spot a magnificent limestone structure. Enjoy the sites and sounds of the jungle while cruising up river with fresh air. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the banks of the river before transferring to Romol Village to a modern guesthouse for an afternoon of relaxation.   

At 16:00, take a guided tour of the Eco Farm. Learn about the locally run initiative by other villages to educate and support the Murut tribe’s agriculture. The Murut people are originally hunters and gatherers who own land but do not have the skills to farm it. Today in Sapulot the Murut people are learning how to utilise the land by setting up fish farms and fruit and vegetable plantations. 

This evening share a delicious home cooked traditional dinner before heading over to the village home for an evening of local wine, dancing and entertainment. 

Overnight in Romol Village (Modern Guesthouse/Homestay with shared bathrooms)

📍 Romol Village to Keningau (256km): 2.5hours Keningau – Kota Kinabalu (110km): 2 hours Trekking activity: 1 hour

After breakfast this morning, be transferred to a hidden waterfall. Park the 4WD and take a short 30-minute jungle trek leading to a beautiful multi-levelled waterfall. Then, go on a 30-45 minutes climb to the top of the jungle trail to be rewarded with a refreshing swim.

Have a freshly cooked lunch form local produce before the trek back to the vehicle for an onward transfer to Keningau and onto Kota Kinabalu for early evening arrival.
