Be rewarded with an immensely beautiful and different side of Mount Kinabalu’s plateau by taking the challenging Low’s Peak trail with a Via Ferrata Trainer. Safely held up by steel cables, trek through courses of ladders, suspended bridges, and other fixed anchors to reach the peak of Malaysia’s highest point. 

Itinerary

📍 Transfer from Kota Kinabalu City to Kinabalu National Park: (85KM) 1.5 hours

At 09:00 Transfer to Mt Kinabalu National Park from downtown Kota Kinabalu. On arrival, a short trek in the park to stretch your legs before lunch at Balsam Café. 


You are at leisure to wander the trails in the park. 
Dinner at Leisure.


NB: Porters are available from the National Park Headquarters and to be arranged directly via Cash payment MYR13 / 1kg. A Walking stick can be of great benefit to you for the climb (particularly on descent) and can be rented locally for MYR10 per stick.


Overnight Kinabalu Lodge – Hill Lodge

📍 Trekking time to Pendant Hut: (6KM) 4-5 hours Activity Level: Medium

Early breakfast in the park before a short walk to the park headquarters to meet the Sabah Parks Mountain guide.  Pre-check at Mountain Torq office. 

Transport to Timpohon Gate is by shuttle (Gate closes to climbers at 10:00). It is recommended that you aim to commence the climb no later than 08:00.


Best approach to this climb, is to take it slow and steady and break periodically at the rest stops – not just to rest but to engage with the stunning scenery that surrounds you and changes as you move closer to the overnight resthouse, Pendant Hut at 3289m. 
Arrive at Pendant Hut for a hot coffee before a mandatory via ferrata briefing at 15:30 to familiarize with the equipment, procedure, timings and most importantly the Via Ferrata Trainer for tomorrow’s Lows Peak Route.


Take a short walk to Laban Rata Rest house for dinner. 20:00 Lights out. 
There is no heating in the dorm style bedrooms, however provided with a warm sleeping bag so the night should be cosy. 


Overnight at Pendant Hut.

📍 Trekking time to the Mt Kinabalu Summit: (2.5KM) 2-3 hour Via Ferrata Lows Peak Traverse: (1.2KM) 4-6 hours Activity Level: Difficult

Wake up at 01:30 and have your early morning breakfast. Dress warm, day packs ready for the long but exciting day ahead. 

Head torches ready and start hiking to the summit by torchlight with the aim to catch the sunrise on Low’s Peak at 05:45. The trail this morning takes up to 3 hours. Climbing 800m on subalpine terrain be challenged by several steps and a final leg to the summit with assistance from a white rope. 

At 06:30 take a 30-minute decent to 3,776m Low’s Peak to meet the Via Ferrata Trainer for the Lows Peak route stretching 1.2km (4-6 hours) at a vertical traverse of 365m. Put on the climbing gear and secure into the Via Ferrata steel cables to take on the challenge of ladders, suspended bridges, walkways and other fixed anchors.   

Traversing the mountain in this manner means that you get to see an entirely different and immensely beautiful side of the mountain plateau that the current summit trail will never have the chance to reveal to you.

Arrive back at Pendant Hut for Lunch. 

Recuperate from a well-deserved rest of the day. Sit in the sun with a cup of famous Sabah Tea at the base of Pendant Hut watching the therapeutic mountain scenery. 

Dinner at Laban Rata’s canteen.

📍 Trekking Time descending to Timpohon Gate: (6km) 4 hours Transfer from Kinabalu Park to Kota Kinabalu City: (85km) 2hours Activity Level: Medium

(Back up day for another summit attempt if Day 2 was not successful)

Wake up, breakfast and ready for the four-hour trek back down the mountain to Timpohon Gate for the short shuttle to the headquarters for the minivan transfer back to Kota Kinabalu. 

Arrival back at Kota Kinabalu City midafternoon.
 

Please Note: Via Feratta is not suitable for those who suffer with issues at heights.

If you wish to experience the Via Ferrata but would like to only do an introduction then you can choose the Walk the Torq route (minimum age of 10years old, 420m approx. 1-2 hours). Please request at time of booking. Reduced rates will be applicable.
