Borneo’s highest peak, Mount Kinabalu rises to 4,095m within Kinabalu Park, Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2000. A pre-climb night at the park lodge is followed by an overnight stay at Laban Rata, 3,272m up the mountain, ahead of a summit push timed for sunrise over Sabah.
Mount Kinabalu holds some of the most important biological diversity in the world and ranks as the 20th most prominent point. The massive granodiorite peak makes for an impressive climb, achieved through steady focus and determination.
The day begins at 09:00 with a transfer to Mount Kinabalu National Park, including a warm-up walk through the Sabah Parks Botanical Garden.
Lunch follows at 13:00 at a local restaurant, before check-in at the National Park Lodge (check-in time 14:00). On arrival, the guide assists with National Park registration and Mountain Guide allocation for the following day. The afternoon is free for the park trails, and a simple local dinner is served at Liwagu Restaurant.
Note: Porters are available from the National Park Headquarters and are arranged directly by cash payment at MYR13 per 1kg. A walking stick is of great benefit on the climb, particularly on the descent, and can be rented locally for MYR10 per stick.
