Luxury Sabah - 10 Days / 9 Nights
To kick off this 10-day adventure, rendezvous with the guide and driver at the local Sandakan Airport. From the airport, head on a short visit to Sandakan Memorial Park before taking a private minivan to Sepilok.
Sandakan Memorial Park is situated on the historical grounds of what was once the Sandakan POW Camp. It is a memorial site dedicated to those who lost their lives during the March from Ranau, and it is very well manicured with a beautiful landscapes that reside next to a local museum.
Day two begins with the opportunity to meet the world’s most intelligent primate; the orangutan. At 09:30 depart for the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, just in time for the morning feeding session at 10:00.
From there, head over to the nearby Sun Bear Conservation Centre, which gets its name from the crescent-shaped patch of fur on the chests of this little-known bear species. Sun bears are the world’s smallest species of bear and it is the aim of the Sun Bear Conservation Centre to protect them from both human and natural threats, while raising awareness of these endearing animals.
Once this tour is completed, receive a transfer back to the hotel for an afternoon of leisure and relaxation.
After breakfast in the morning, receive a comfortable minivan transfer with the guide to Sandakan Jetty and board a boat to transfer to the Kinabatangan River. This two-hour boat journey passes by local villages and lush rainforest.
1300 Arrive at the lodge, check in and enjoy lunch. The Local guide will conduct a briefing on the upcoming activities and advice on recommended gear. Time in the afternoon to relax.
16:30 Late in the afternoon, hop on a riverboat for a cruise up the Kinabatangan River in search for wildlife - most notably, the proboscis monkeys which is endemic to Borneo. Other fauna is likely to be spotted in the Lower Kinabatangan Reserve includes elephants, hornbills, gibbons, and many birds.
Return to the lodge for dinner before mid-evening take a stroll along the boardwalk on a lookout for nocturnal animals and interesting insects.
Overnight at Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort
06:00 Rise early in the morning along with the birds and other animals of the river for a cruise to Kelenanap Oxbow Lake, a crescent shaped lake that formed when the river’s meander became so wide that it cut itself off. The stillness of the lake and relative protection provides a haven for animals and plants making for an ecosystem that’s completely distinct from that of the river.
08:30 Continue to visit the local fishing village, Kampung Abai. Interact with local Orang Sungai, river people and observe daily activities in the fishing village.
10:00 Return to the resort for breakfast and the rest of the day is at leisure before heading out in the late afternoon to watch the river activities of many primate species that become active during this time. The afternoon is a particularly advantageous time to spot wildlife and the light is perfect for photography.
16:30 Set off for another afternoon cruise in search of the mangrove specials, river sceneries, village landscapes and more wildlife. In good weather, there is a possibility to see firefly colonies which are found at certain parts of the river. Cruise back to KWR for dinner at the common area.
20:30 After dinner, take a night river safari on a look out for target species.
Overnight at Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort
Awake at 07:00 to depart for Danum Valley, with a 1-hour boat ride to Sukau Jetty to board land transportation to Lahad Datu. From Lahad Datu, depart for a private overland transfer by 4WD into the thick rainforest area of the Danum Valley – one of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems. Around 30km of this 85km journey is on sealed roads, and the last two hours are along a gravel road – this ride is a bumpy one, but is sure to please those looking for a truly authentic Danum Valley experience!
On arrival at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge, check in late afternoon and have the option to relax or a walk along the trails -including the 130-metre-tall, 300-metre-long canopy walk, high atop the 130 million year-old rainforest below, which hums with unabated jungle sounds.
After dinner, board one of the open-top 4WD vehicles for an exhilarating night spotlighting tour. Accompanied by a local guide who shines a light into the jungle looking for nocturnal animals, spot a range of nocturnal animals which inhabit the reserve. Those present will observe a range of wildlife, from samba deer to civet cats, leopards, and a stunning array of insects and frogs. Once completed, return to the chalet for the evening and spend the night at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge.
AT 09:00, the morning chorus of the jungle is a cacophony of sounds ranging from birds to primates, such as the gibbon. Taking a packed breakfast, travel to a 200-year-old Kadazandusun Burial Site, known as “Coffin Cliff”, along the 2.6km Viewpoint Trail. The end of this trail results in spectacular views over an ocean-like million-year-old jungle – a truly spectacular sight. The return journey includes a trip to waterfalls!
Return to the resort for lunch.
The rest of the afternoon is at leisure; however, there is a range of optional activities available, such as private trekking, tubing on the Danum River and specialised guided tours. There is also a series of tracks leading around the Canopy Walk are free to discover at will.
This evening, venture into the jungle on foot with a local guide. Quietly entering the jungle reveals a stunning array of wildlife, not to mention the variety and size of the many insects that flourish in the evening hours.

After a leisurely morning, lunch is served at 13:30, followed by check out and transfer to Lahad Datu Airport for an onward flight to Kota Kinabalu.
Once in Kota Kinabalu, transfer to Shangri La Rasa Ria, arriving in the late afternoon. Enjoy a sunset cocktail and watch as the sky fills with the explosive colours of a glorious sunset surrounded by jungle. In the evening, choose from one of seven spectacular restaurants at Shangri La Rasa Ria.
Awake early for an unforgettable half-day tour of Kota Kinabalu. Climb into a helicopter and take off for a scenic flight over Mount Kinabalu. With the captain acting as the guide, soar over the highest peak in Southeast Asia. Learn about the myths and legends of Mount Kinabalu and hear how the locals make offerings to the spirits who are believed to still live there.
Enjoy seemingly endless views of emerald-green rainforest fading into the distance like waves on the ocean. F\While flying over Crocker Range, see ancient rainforests and serpentine rivers snaking through the jungle like muddy dragons. Swoop down and see charming rustic villages in the shadows of majestic Mount Kinabalu. The verdant, lush tropical greenery slowly gives way to vast paddy fields as the helicopter loops around to the city.
After this adrenaline rush, travel to a tranquil spa for a rejuvenating, holistic spa session. Choose from a selection of spa treatments and massage therapies, many of which are inspired by Borneo’s ‘Bobohizan’, the island’s native healers. Relax as expert masseurs ease away muscle pain using herbs and pressure points.
After indulging in a remarkable morning of both adrenaline and relaxation, spend the afternoon relaxing before tonight’s sunset cocktails and beachside private dining.
In the afternoon, at 17:30, meet and greet with a personal host for the evening for an explanation of tonight’s menu and to give a wine preferences. Then, take a brisk stroll along the white sand beaches before sipping a cocktail to the backdrop of Borneo’s breathtaking sunset. As the sun sets take a seat in a personal beachfront gazebo to be served a delicious five-course meal. Relax to the sound of the ocean before a transfer back to the hotel.
