Kuching City Break

📍 Kuching Airport to Hotel (9km): 20 mins

Upon arrival at the airport in Kuching, meet with the guide and driver and receive a private transfer to the hotel for check in.

14:00 After taking some time to freshen up and relax, meet with the guide in the afternoon and head out for a Kuching city tour. Known locally as the ‘Cat City’, it won’t take long to notice why this charming name has been bestowed upon the city -there are statues and tributes to cats at nearly every street corner. While taking a look around, visit the old White Rajah buildings, open markets, temples and mosques. Finally visit the Urang Sarawak Museum to discover Sarawak’s Culture and history through key artefacts. After the Sarawak city tour, return to the hotel.

08.00 Meet with the guide at 08:00 in the hotel lobby and depart for the 45-minute transfer to Semenggoh Orang Utan Wildlife Centre. Established in 1975 and just outside Kuching, Semenggoh Nature Reserve is home of many orang utans.  For over 20 years, the wardens here trained young orang utans, who had been orphaned or rescued from captivity, how to survive in the wild.

It is now a centre for the study of orang utan biology and behaviour and this is the primary reason that people visit the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre. However, the rangers also do work with other species including crocodiles and hornbills. 

At 09:00, arrive at Semenggoh for the first feeding of the day. Take a short 15-minute walk through the rainforest to the feeding platform where the rangers will be put fruits out for the semi wild orang utans who spend most of their time roaming the forest but frequently come back to the centre for a free meal.

10:30 leave to an scenic drive passing through rice fields, rubber, cocoa and pepper plantation, luxuriant tropical forest and river and mountain ranges to explore Annah Rais, a Bidayuh Tribe Longhouse home of over 80 families. Located in an isolated valley guarded by four mountains, an strategic position which helped the villagers ward off headhunting attacks in the past. Discover the old bamboo longhouse with your guide, learn about the Bidayuh culture and observe the leisure-pace lifestyle of the natives. Have a tea break with a family. Among the interesting relics here are the “Cannon of Peace” and several human skulls which are about 100 yeards old which are kept at the Head House “Baruk”.  

Enjoy a traditional Bidayuh lunch followed with a jungle walk to visit the village farm and after return to Kuching.

📍 Hotel to Bako National Park (30km): 35mins Tour duration: approx. 7 hours

At 08:00, depart Kuching for a 45-minute drive to Bako Fishing Village.  Continue by motorised boat for a 30-minute cruise along the beautiful coast to reach Bako National Park. 

The oldest of Sarawak’s national parks, Bako offers the perfect introduction to Sarawak’s forests and wildlife. Bako is also home to 275 rare proboscis monkey, found only in Borneo. Observe the fabulous proboscis monkeys, silvered langurs, bearded pigs and monitor lizards. Despite its seemingly small size, Bako contains a wide range of vegetation – swamp forest, scrub-like padang vegetation, mangrove forest, dipterocarp forest, delicate cliff vegetation and beautiful sandy beaches.  

Explore the rainforest on a variety of walking trails from mighty 80-metre dipterocarps to dense mangrove forest.  For bird enthusiasts, Bako is home to many species such as the rufous-backed kingfisher, stork-billed kingfisher, red-crowned barbet, white-bellied woodpecker and many more.  During low tide, observe the mudskippers and blue-fiddler crabs coming out from their hideout for feeding on the beaches.

Take a simple lunch at the park café before returning to Bako Village by boat and onward transfer to Kuching.

(Depending on the tides the boats will pull up at the jetty or onto the beach for arrival and departure. The return times will also be tide-dependent, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey).

Return to the hotel in Kuching for an evening at leisure.
