Kiulu Farmstay (Fig Tree) is nestled along the scenic Kiulu River, a wonderful community-based ecotourism project that lets you fully immerse yourself in Sabahan culture. Set in a picturesque valley, you’ll learn to cook traditional dishes with the tranquil river and lush rice fields as your backdrop. Enjoy nature walks with a local guide, discover the Riparian community and see firsthand how they live in harmony with the surrounding environment.
Itinerary
📍 Kota Kinabalu Hotel to Kiulu Valley (60 km): 1.5hours
Today’s journey begins at 09:00 with a hotel pickup and a 45-minute scenic drive into Sabah’s countryside. Along the way, make a short stop at the Tamparuli Suspension Bridge and a nearby local market. Enjoy the charming landscape of the Kiulu Valley as you pass rolling hills, small farms, and the flowing Kiulu River.
Arrive at Kampung Mantob, home to the community-run Kiulu Valley Farmstay, and receive a warm welcome from your host family. A short orientation follows to brief you on the homestay experience and the program.
For lunch, enjoy a home-cooked traditional lunch lovingly prepared by your hosts. After lunch, immerse yourself in local culture by participating in activities such as traditional rice processing, blowpipe demonstration and practice, rubber tapping, and, if in season, rice planting. If weather and time permit, enjoy a refreshing dip in the Kiulu River before returning for a locally prepared dinner.
Dinner will be served in the evening by your host family. Afterwards, take the opportunity to sit and talk with the local villagers as they share stories about the history and folktales of the area.

Wake up to the peaceful sounds of the Kiulu countryside and enjoy a traditional home-cooked breakfast. After breakfast, begin the day with a guided jungle trek, where you’ll learn how to pick local produce using traditional methods passed down through generations. This hands-on activity offers an authentic glimpse into the local way of life.
Return to the farmstay where your host family will prepare another delicious home-cooked lunch. If the weather is kind, you can cool off with a refreshing swim in the river before enjoying some time at leisure to relax or take in the surrounding nature.
Dinner will be served in the evening, after which you can spend quality time with your host family, deepening your understanding of local culture and daily life.
Optional: Guests may join the handicraft-making and traditional games (available upon request at a surcharge).

📍 Kiulu Valley to Kota Kinabalu drop off point (60 km): 1.5hours
After breakfast, bid farewell to your host family and the village of Kampung Mantob. At approximately 09:00, depart the Kiulu Valley and return to Kota Kinabalu via the same scenic countryside route. Expected arrival in the city is by late morning, bringing a meaningful and restful rural retreat to a close.
