Itinerary

📍 Kota Kinabalu to Romol Eco Village (230 km): Approx. 3 hours 40 minutes

The journey begins with an early morning transfer from Kota Kinabalu to Romol Eco Village, a serene hideaway surrounded by greenery. A hearty home-cooked lunch awaits guests at the Romol Guesthouse, offering a warm introduction to the flavours of the region.

After settling in, the afternoon continues with a 3:00 p.m. briefing at the MunorAulai Integrated Farm. A local English-speaking villager will share the story behind the farm, highlighting its mission to empower the community, promote sustainability and preserve traditional knowledge. This is followed by a gentle walk through the farm, allowing guests to get a feel for the land, its crops and its purpose.

As the sun begins to set, dinner is served at 7:30 p.m., followed by a charming cultural encounter: a traditional beading lesson led by skilled villagers. It’s a moment for guests to connect, create and appreciate the rich heritage of the Sapulot people. As night falls, guests can unwind in their rooms at the MunorAulai Guesthouse, lulled to sleep by the sounds of crickets and the whisper of the forest.

After breakfast at 7:30 a.m., the day unfolds with hands-on participation in one or two of the farm’s daily activities. Depending on the season, guests may assist with nursery care, general farm maintenance or the early-stage processing of harvested produce. The MunorAulai Integrated Farm is a visionary two-hectare model designed to optimise land use and sustainably maximise productivity. Its goal is to create a replicable model that empowers villagers with small plots of land to improve their livelihoods. What guests experience here represents a grassroots solution with the potential to transform rural communities.

Lunch is served at 12:30 p.m. back at the guesthouse. The afternoon resumes at 2:30 p.m. with a return to the farm, followed by a coffee or tea break at 4:30 p.m. To round off the day, guests can try their hand at fishing in one of the farm’s freshwater ponds. Any fish they catch will be prepared and served at dinner, bringing the day’s efforts full circle.

Dinner is served at 7:30 p.m. Afterwards, there is an optional weaving demonstration offered by local artisans—a meditative craft that reflects the rich heritage of the community. Guests will spend a second peaceful night at the MunorAulai Guesthouse, embraced once again by the quiet harmony of nature.

Guided by local experts, guests will gain insight into this age-old fermentation technique used to create rice or tapioca wine—a ritual often shared during festivals and ceremonies among the indigenous Murut people.

At 12:30 p.m., a wholesome lunch is served, followed by a creative session in the early afternoon. Using ingredients freshly sourced from the farm—such as cocoa powder, bananas, coconut, lime, jackfruit and pineapple—guests will learn how to make ice cream the local way. It’s a fun, hands-on activity that blends tropical flavours with rural ingenuity.

A relaxed coffee or tea break at 4:30 p.m. sets the tone for the evening. Guests are invited to join in cooking dinner, helping to prepare their favourite dishes using fresh farm produce and traditional recipes.

Dinner is served at 7:30 p.m., followed by an unforgettable cultural evening. Murut villagers will gather to share their heritage through dance, music and storytelling. Guests are welcome to join in the rhythm and energy of the traditional dances. For those interested in a lasting memory, optional traditional tattoos are available; each design is steeped in meaning, and costs vary based on the artwork chosen.

The third night at the MunorAulai Guesthouse promises another deep connection with local life, surrounded by forest sounds and warm community spirit.

At 11:00 a.m., an English-speaking guide will meet the guests for the return journey. They will settle in for the scenic transfer back to Kota Kinabalu, carrying with them rich memories, new skills and a deeper connection to the heart of Sabah.
