Itinerary

📍 Luang Prabang Airport – Nam Khan Project Ecolodge (4 km): 15 min

Upon arrival in Luang Prabang, our guide and driver will be waiting to provide transport to the hotel for check in.

The Namkhan Project was founded in 2017, by Paul Bauer and Xisca Llabres. Both of them had the idea, to build up a place where community plays a major role and people can get in touch with farming and permaculture.Based on this idea, they put it into practice and create a unique place! In the 1 ha. organic farms, built on permaculture showcases, They are producing a wide variety  of trees, vegetables, herbs and seeds, in a beautiful ecological and water integrated landscape.
At the Namkhan project they are working towards sustainability by training locals, international students and volunteers to the practices of integrated farming and permaculture design.

When you have checked in at the Nam khan Ecolodge, enjoy a Lao Traditional Massage along the river; strong and energetic!

Start the morning with a Yoga Class and Meditation Class facing the river. These practices  relieve stress, strengthen the body, open up the soul and promote flexibility.

After breakfast at the hotel, meet elephants and take a kayaking ride down the Nam Khan river!

Drive out 5 minutes to Ban Xieng Lek village and enjoy either coffee or tea while the guide explains the day’s itinerary and provides an in-depth introduction to elephant behaviour and the best means of interacting with them.

After the morning’s introduction, continue with a short ride across the Nam Khan River where the elephants await. The guide and mahouts will provide an introduction to the gentle giants, followed by a chance to feed them some healthy snacks.
Elephants and Mahouts will interact and continue their on-going bonding in the river, while you watch them and enjoy the majestic elephants during bathtime.

Continue the experience with the trekking portion of the trip. After crossing through a stretch of beautiful Lao gardens, head into the jungle-covered Huay Nok stream. Walking alongside the elephants, crisscross through the cool waters developing a profound sense of understanding, respect and care for these amazing animals. After the trek completes, start the walk back and bid farewell to the elephants.

Before heading back, enjoy a freshly prepared local Lao meal, made from organically grown local produce. Relax, kick back and soak in the day’s experiences on the property’s veranda overlooking the river and surrounding misty mountains. After lunch, continue with the short ride back to Luang Prabang, arriving around 13:30.

NOTE: MandaLao does not allow customers to bathe the Elephants directly.  This is to fall in line with WAP-World Animal Protection Guidelines whom we are working closely with.  The elephants are free to choose if they enter the river or not and the only people that will wash the elephants would be their mahout.

Once done with lunch, enjoy a half day tour at the farm, you can extend your knowledge or even inspire yourself about farming and permaculture systems. Some examples about the sustainable systems used are the “ chicken tractor” or the “ Block Soldier Fly Larvae cleaners”.

Once you have visited the entire farm, you will collect the vegetables and fruits available based on seasonality and your desired dish. We then head back to the kitchen, where a local chef will help you cook local, simple and homey dishes. It doesn’t get any fresher than this!

For dessert,  have a try at the Nam Khan Project’s jams and dried fruits. Once you are full, enjoy the forest pool and the view along the Nam Khan river.
