TIPS for a great Pi Mai experience:

  • This tour is flexible to include local events such as processions of nagas, lanterns and many traditional performances.
  • You are certain to get wet during Pi Mai Lao. Always keep passports, mobile phones and other valuables in a waterproof container, or leave them somewhere safe. You should also bring adequate clothes and shoes.
  • During Laos’ hottest season, it is most welcome getting soaking wet. But if you know that’s something you wouldn’t enjoy, please do not plan to visit in the middle of April.
  • Don’t forget to wish everyone a happy Lao New Year, “Souksan Van Pi Mai” or “Sabaidy Pi Mai”, and smile while you get wet!

Welcome to the spiritual capital of Laos! Lao New Year is celebrated at the same time each year. This is one of the most famous and popular festival in Laos. On the 13th, Buddha images are taken out of the temples to be cleansed with scented water by devotees, and placed on special temporary altars within the compounds of “wats” (temples). Devotees gather the scented water falling off the images, to take home and use it to pour on friends and relatives, as an act of cleansing and purification before entering the New Year. Boun Pi Mai is a time for much joyous celebration, with good deeds and prayers in anticipation the New Year.
