Located in the eastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, Onomichi is a small, picturesque town, which sits on the Seto Inland Sea coast.

Onomichi is characterised by the many hills around which the city has developed — the main sightseeing spots are perched on these slopes. Visitors enjoy strolling up the narrow streets and crossing residential areas to find interesting sights. Twenty-five temples are nestled along the slopes of Onomichi, forming part of the area's famous Temple Walk.

Despite its small size, Onomichi has made several contributions to the filmmaking and literary world. Several renowned authors were born here and many movies have been shot in the city.

Start early to discover the highlight of the area, the Shimanami Kaido, an 80-kilometre long route traversing the bridges and islands of the Seto Inland Sea. This road is the only land link between Honshu and Shikoku that is usable by cyclists and pedestrians.

Today, start the intermediate 30-kilometre course, crossing three islands and two iconic bridges.

Pick up the rental bicycle at the nearest rental spot and board the nearby ferry to start the cycling course.

The blue line painted on the road indicates distances and ensures cyclists are following the correct path. There are local points of interest, such as small temples, dotted along the entire route, and cyclists will find there are many chances to stop and get a glimpse of the local, rural life.

Cycling up the sloped, designated cycling paths to reach the bridges is generally the most challenging part of the day, but the views of the Seto Inland Sea and its islets from above more than make up for it.
Upon arrival at Setoda Port, take a break in the rest area and take the ferry back to Onomichi where the bike can be returned.

Note:
-Convenience stores and rest areas can be found at frequent intervals along the road.
-Bikes can be left at Setoda for an extra charge.
