Trek mighty Mount Baturโ€™s summit for sunrise vistas, raft down the cascading Telaga Waja River and venture by jeep through the heart of Baliโ€™s countryside. 

Itinerary

๐Ÿ“ Denpasar Ngurah Rai international Airport โ€“ Ubud (36 km): 1 hour 20 minutes

Arrive in the afternoon at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar and be greeted by the local travel guide for a private transfer to Ubud. This charming town, located in the centre of the island, is the artistic and cultural centre of Bali. 

Then continue to Ubud Monkey Forest, known for its conservation efforts, a nature reserve and temple complex. It houses approximately 340 monkeys which are known as long-tailed Macaques (Macaca fascicularis). Take a long walk on the pedestrian path around the Monkey Forest and enjoy the atmosphere of the tropical rainforest in the heart of Ubud.

Afterwards, head into town and wander Ubud’s eclectic ‘artsy’ streets before enjoying a traditional ‘Rijstaffel’ dinner showcasing cuisine across the Indonesian archipelago. The Dutch-coined term Rijstaffel, which is now a local phrase, means ‘rice table’ and allows one to sample multiple Indonesian dishes in a single sitting.

After filling up on Indonesian specialties, head back to the hotel and spend the rest of the evening at leisure.

In the morning, get picked up from the hotel between 07:45 and 08:15 and transfer to the rafting starting point

Upon reaching the riverbanks, meet with professional rafting guides who will provide a detailed safety demonstration. Then, grab a helmet, lifejacket and paddle and head to the rafts for this exhilarating Bali rafting adventure. (Note: each raft will carry four guests and one guide)

Once the raft is fully afloat, start paddling! The journey will take 1.5-2 hours in total with a mix of gently flowing waters and exhilarating rapids. Be sure to look around and enjoy the breath-taking scenery that surrounds the rivers. Pass by towering gorges and natural waterfalls. Around halfway through the journey, stop on the riverbanks for a chance to swim or to simply soak up the scenery. 

Reach the take-out point late this morning then transfer to a local restaurant set amid the jungle. Dry off in the changing room’s then tuck into a delicious Indonesian buffet, enjoying the fabulous views while refueling.

Later in the afternoon, check out the final resting place of Anak Wungsu, a former Balinese king, and his wives. This 11th century tomb is surrounded by nine stone Candi sculpted out of lava rocks. Then, take a one-hour trek from Gunung Kawi while descending into a small valley containing the spectacular terraced rice fields of Tegallalang. Wander past small villages while the guide explains the various stages of rice farming in Bali and the many local seasonal crops that form part of the Balinese countryside.

At the end of trek, take a coffee or tea and a traditional cake at a warung before returning to the hotel.

Note: Gunung Kawi is a very unique temple in Bali, however to access the temple involves a significant amount of stairs. Not ideal for the walking-impaired.

No visit to Bali would be complete without witnessing traditional dance. In the evening, be treated to a spectacular performance in a nearby village. Afterwards, enjoy set menu dinner of Indonesian cuisine to wrap up a magical evening.

๐Ÿ“ Ubud โ€“ Jatiluwih (45 km): 1 hour 30 minutes Jatiluwih โ€“ Batukaru Temple (10 km): 20 minutes Batukaru Temple โ€“ Ubud (40 km): 1 hour 20 minutes

Depart from the coast for a full day exploration.

First, stop at the Royal Temple of Mengwi which was built in 1634 to serve as the family temple of the Mengwi dynasty. Admire this stunning piece of historic architecture, surrounded by a moat with multi–roofed Meru shrines and intricately carved wooden gates.

Continue the drive to the UNESCO World Heritage Jatiluwih rice terraces to explore their unique Subak irrigation system. After a short safety briefing, set off for a one hour bicycle ride led by an experienced guide. Explore the terraces on bike to maximise the experience going off-the-beaten path and at leisure. See farmers going about their daily routine in the middle of the rice fields against the backdrop of the beautiful cascading fields.

Lunch at a local restaurant.

This afternoon, drive to Lake Bratan, one of Bedugul’s three natural lakes. Admire the views of the peaceful waters and snap photos of Ulun Danu, an iconic 17th-century temple located on the lake’s edge.

Next up, visit the traditional market of Bedugul where a myriad of locally-grown fruits, vegetables and orchids are for sale. Browse the stalls alongside the locals and discover spices and herbs used in Balinese cooking.

Return to the hotel after a satisfying day of exploring the highlights of Bali’s highlands.

๐Ÿ“ Ubud โ€“ Kintamani (35 km): 1 hour 10 minutes

Be picked up from lobby hotel early in morning, well before dawn around 02:00 – 02:30. Depart to the starting point at the base of Mount Batur.

The hiking journey begins at the Expedition Bali Adventure Camp.  Jump on to custom built SUVs and drive to the half way up the volcano. Upon arrive at the half way a highly trained hiking specialist guide will lead the way to the summit of the volcano during the tour.

After approximately 1 hour of climbing, approach the top of the main crater. Here, be greeted by a completely different landscape with a wind-swept pathway and very few rocks and vegetation.

Around 06:00, while sitting at the top of the volcano (1,717 metres), witness a life-altering sunrise over Mount Abang and Mount Agung. On clear days it’s possible to view Lombok’s Mount Rinjani across the Lombok Strait.
