The name ‘Surabaya’ derives from two Javanese words Suro meaning Shark and Boyo meaning Crocodile: The city, with a population of over 6 million people, is the capital of East Java Province, and is the 2nd largest in Indonesia after Jakarta. It’s also the gateway to two of Indonesia’s most iconic volcanoes: Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen.

Start the day with a walk around the busy and lively streets of Chinatown and its famous Red Bridge before heading to the nearby Kampung Arab. This old district, also known as Ampel, is still largely occupied by descents of the old Arab merchants who came to trade here as early as the 15th century, and who brought Islam to Java. At the end of narrow lane, visit the Old Sunan Ampel Mosque founded in 15th Century by Sunan Ampel one of the nine Muslim saints of Java.
