An unforgettable trip where the locals go to relax. This unique trail leaves Siem Reap behind and heads for the sacred mountain of Phnom Kulen. Enjoy the hiking on the plateau of the Kulen Mountain and a relaxing dip in the famous River of 1,000 Lingas and connect with the most ancient part of the Khmer Empire.

Itinerary

📍 Transfer from Siem Reap to Kulen: 1 hours and half in the morning Trekking: 16 km, approximately about 4-5 hours Difficulty: Medium

This morning wake early and ventured out to Phnom Kulen, where the Khmer Empire was born. Breathe in the cooler air here and enjoy being surrounded by the natural jungle that surrounds the checkpoint.

After breakfast, take a short transfer about 1 hour and half to the enormous Kulen Mountain, and it slowly begins to dominate the view as the trail approaches.

Kulen Mountain (Phnom Kulen) is an impressive sandstone plateau in this otherwise flat area. The mountain is considered the birthplace of the Khmer empire and a sacred place for the Khmer. To begin, set out with an unforgettable trekking experience down a dusty access road which slowly fades to sandy tracks and sandstone paths to the Bat Cave, a spiritual cavern where monks and hermits go to meditate. From there the adventure continues on foot a short distance to the Elephant Pond, a collection of stone animals that seem to be standing guard atop the massive Phnom Kulen ridge. Begins to wane toward Anlong Thom, a small village near the heart of the mountain. 

Overnight at a simple homestay in the village. Basic bathroom and toilet facilities are available.

Get up early for a breath of fresh, countryside air. Before the day begins, the countryside and top of Kulen Mountain is calm and filled with the muted sounds of a still-waking Earth.

After breakfast, start your beautiful trekking through the real rural area called Khla Khmum Village and also you’ll explore Khla Khmum temple, which was pre-angkorian and was built around the 8th century. Khla Khmum in English means Bear. After that, they continued to trek through rice fields and forest to the mountaintop temple of Kra Hom, the other archaeological remains which it is believed formed part of one of South East Asia’s largest ancient cities. And then continue to Popel Village to learn and experience about how local people live and their daily life. Continue your short trek to Preah Angthom village (Declining Buddha) and waterfall.

Free at leisure, enjoy your swimming or explore the village. 

Overnight at a local homestay, where you can have a cool shower and a freshly prepared BBQ dinner, before watching the night close in from this riverside location…

📍 Transfer from foothill to Siem Reap: 1.5 hours in the afternoon Hiking distance: 6 km, approximately 2 hours Difficulty: Easy

Get up early for a breath of fresh air, listen to the natural bird songs, It’s so beautiful.

After breakfast, take a short trek to visit the famous River of 1,000 Lingas and continue hiking through jungle trails, rising down from the top of Kulen Mountain to the flat countryside is the enormous Preah AngChoub Pagoda, and it slowly begins to dominate the view as the trail approaches. 

After a pleasant stopover, mount up once more for a fun descent down a long, dusty and winding road. Watch for sharp turns and be ready for some magnificent views of the countryside on the final, twisting stretch of road.

After that, we’ll continue trekking down the mountain to foothill where the bus is waiting for you to transfer back to Siem Reap. 

Please note: If clients have not much time or have no abilities to trek down today, we’ll transfer from the homestay site back to Siem Reap.
