Today, you will spend the day exploring some truly remarkable districts of the Thai capital. Tasty treats influenced by Portuguese colonialists of centuries past. Do your bit for the environment by using a solar powered boat along the Chao Phraya river. Learn about local history by exploring unique temples with fascinating stories and unique features. Have a beautiful lunch in a stunning natural setting. A day for satisfying a thirst for historical knowledge as well as your pallet.
Pick up at 08:00 and transferred to the Portuguese Quarter. Known locally as Kudichin, this neighborhood was established before the city of Bangkok was founded, and most tourists overlook its quaint little streets. It feels like an entirely different continent, with bakeries selling Portuguese treats and the Santa Cruz church bells ringing in the background. Stop at some local shops selling Khanom Farang (only open Monday to Friday) and observe the traditional methods used to create these Portuguese cookies.
After a morning treat, take a short stroll to the pier at Wat Kalayanamit to board a private Thai retro solar boat. The boat may appear fairly simple, but it’s an impressive feat of eco-friendly engineering, powered by solar energy from the sun during the day. Sit back and relax on a soft cushion as the boat slowly cruises along the banks of the Chao Phraya River through Bangkok’s historic and charming klongs. Once a major trading route, these waterways are now lined with wooden shop houses and local temples.
The boat continues cruising to Klong Bang Khuntien, where it makes a stop at Wat Ratcha Orasaram Ratchaworawihan, a distinct temple featuring Chinese-style artwork and artifacts. Take a closer look at the temple’s roof, adorned with unique green-coated ceramic tiles. If time allows, you may also visit the nearby Wat Nang Nong Worawihan, another historic temple dating back to the era of King Rama III, featuring beautiful mural paintings depicting Chinese-influenced stories.
Return to the boat and relax for a little while until you reach the authentic natural garden and restaurant called 'Poomjai Garden,' nestled quietly on the banks of the canal. Owned by a local Thai family, this beautiful garden has over 100 years of history. The family renovated the land into an organic permaculture, preserving rare plants and trees, including a century-old lychee tree. The family is also connected with the nearby local community, sourcing fresh ingredients for their restaurant.
Upon arrival at the garden’s pier, be greeted and welcomed with a local signature herbal drink, followed by a delicious lunch amongst the natural atmosphere. After delighting your stomach with yummy dishes, take a garden tour, walk through naturally decorated landscapes, and learn more about various species of herbs, plants, and trees. The tour may take up to an hour before being picked up by a private transfer and taken back to the hotel. (L)
