Pick up from your Bangkok hotel at approximately 08:30, you will embark on an exciting journey to explore Thailand's ancient capital and cultural heritage with a day trip to Ayutthaya. The day begins with a drive from Bangkok to Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed city. As you travel, the route takes you through Bangkok's sprawling suburbs and into the vibrant countryside, passing lush rice paddies along the way.

After approximately 1.5 hours, you will arrive in Ayutthaya and begin your exploration. Learn about the rich history of this ancient city, from its founding as the capital in the 14th century to its eventual demise at the hands of Burmese invaders in the 1700s. As you journey through the temple-studded landscape, stop to visit the revered Wat Yai Chaimongkol and Wat Mahathat. At Wat Mahathat, don't forget to capture a photo of the iconic Buddha image encircled by the roots of a tree—one of the most famous sights in Ayutthaya.

After exploring the ruins of the ancient kingdom, you'll be ready to indulge in some dishes that were made famous during this period. Stop by a local, unique restaurant for an elevated Thai lunch, set in stunning surroundings. The staff, service, food, atmosphere, and location all hold historical significance, reflecting the charm and culture of the Ayutthaya period.

The final stop on this relaxed-paced tour is a visit to the “Arts of the Kingdom” museum. This museum offers a deep insight into the world of Royal Thai art, showcasing everything from handcrafted golden thrones to massive wooden sculptures and handwoven fabric pictures. It’s a treasure trove of exquisite pieces. Take some time to explore the museum with the help of your guide and the museum’s audio guide, learning about the history of the region and the significance of these pieces in Thai culture, both historically and today. Some of the items are modern and relevant to the current Thai royal family, while others are centuries old.

If time permits, you may also visit the Khon Museum. Khon is one of Thailand’s oldest narrative dance forms, telling historical stories through dance. Commissioned by the famous Queen Sirikit through the SUPPORT Foundation, a new theatrical interpretation of the ancient Khon performance has been created. The museum displays costumes and apparatus used in these performances, along with the stories and traditions behind the art form throughout history.

After exploring the impressive artifacts in these museums, head back to Bangkok with a deeper understanding of this significant period in Thai history. (L)
