Discover how simple Thai phrases can turn everyday exchanges into lasting connections. This experience combines easy language lessons with real-world encounters, helping travellers connect more deeply with locals and the culture of warmth and hospitality that defines daily Thai life.
At 08:30, meet a Thai guide in the hotel lobby to begin the day. After a short briefing, travel like a local on the city’s Skytrain, getting familiar with the local surroundings, culture and language. Head towards the Ekamai area on the outskirts of downtown Bangkok, a residential neighbourhood lesser-known to tourists. Once off the Skytrain, hop on an electric tuk-tuk waiting at the stairs and enjoy a ride down Ekamai Street towards Steps Cafe, where the Thai lesson will take place.
Steps Cafe is part of Steps Community, a social enterprise that fosters an inclusive environment for neurodivergent individuals, both children and young adults. The organisation provides training to equip them with the skills needed to access fulfilling careers and a brighter future. Additionally, the community collaborates with various sectors, such as schools and hotels, to help their trainees access the opportunities they deserve.
Upon arrival at the cafe, be welcomed by the host, who will give a 15-minute tour of the community, explaining its mission, impact and the accommodations available for the trainees. Next, meet a Thai instructor for a one-hour lesson covering basic Thai phrases and expressions useful for a journey in Thailand. Refreshments and snacks will be served during the session.
After the lesson, it’s time to practice. Bid farewell to the Thai instructor and host before continuing on an electric tuk-tuk towards a nearby local market. Here, put the newly-learned Thai language skills to use, practicing greetings, asking questions and more with locals. The Thai guide accompanies and provides assistance throughout the experience. Enjoy a local lunch at the market — a great opportunity to continue practicing Thai in conversation.
Return to the hotel by Skytrain, ending the day with one final phrase to your guide, Khop Khun Krub/Ka or Thank you! (L)
