Discover Thai culture through the eyes of a local. Spend a day with a family, joining them as they go about their day to day activities. Learn about deep-rooted traditions and hear stories of the past while preparing a typical Thai meal at the family’s rural home.
Programme Details
You will be picked up at 09:00. Get a true taste of Thai life. Spend a day far removed from the tourist areas of Chiang Mai and be immersed in local culture.
Firstly, it’s important to dress like a local so don a pair of ‘fisherman’s pants’, the comfortable cotton trousers worn in rural villages in the north. Then venture out of the city to a local neighbourhood called Hang Dong to meet Mr. Prapat and his family. The hosts will welcome you into their home.
After the introductions take a walk around the village. See examples of local architecture and traditional ways of life. There may be an opportunity to witness basket weaving, a handmade process that has remained unchanged for centuries.
Next up is a visit to the market. Browse the stalls and purchase the freshest ingredients on offer. Then return to Mr. Prapat’s home, grab an apron and start cooking! The family will share their recipes and demonstrate the traditional techniques needed to prepare delicious northern Thai dishes. Share stories of food and family while cooking today’s lunch. Afterwards sit down with the family and dine on the tasty meal.
The afternoon is free to explore the neighbourhood. Capture scenes of daily life and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of this local area.
Towards the end of the day, say farewell to Mr. Prapat and his family and return to Chiang Mai. (L)

- In case of other private groups booking the tour on the same day, the presentation part, conducted upon arrival by Mr. Prapat, about the family, the house, Thai tradition and culture, as well as a walk through the garden, will be join-in. But cooking experience with the family, also the dining, will be private.
- This is not a commercial cooking class. This is a fun cooking experience with a local family.
