Explore various sustainable-living initiatives practised in the local village of Ban Pong Huai Lan. Just an hour away from Chiang Mai town, meet the locals and learn all about sustainable farming methods, indulge in delicacies and get hands-on in making traditional handicrafts.
Pick up at 08:30 for a one-hour drive out of Chiang Mai to Ban Pong Huai Lan, a local village that is part of the Royal Initiative Project, where the community lives sustainably. Enjoy various local activities throughout the day while interacting with the villagers.
Upon arrival, receive a warm welcome from the locals and a fresh herbal drink, followed by an introduction to the community. Listen to stories about the royal initiative project, which established the forest preservation unit and helped build the Huai Lan Reservoir. Learn more about King Bhumibol’s initiatives and his ideas on how the land and area can be properly managed for sustainable livelihoods. Visit the Fishery Department and discover how the fishing farm has become a significant food resource for the local community. Continue to Huai Lan Reservoir and enjoy the natural panoramic views overlooking the reservoir.
At midday, sit down with the locals to enjoy simple local dishes prepared by the villagers.
After lunch, visit Grandma Som’s Farm, a sustainable-living farm inspired by the Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy—growing enough food for the community to eat and selling any surplus.
Next, experience hands-on traditional handloom weaving, thread spinning, and the entire weaving process with the professional women’s group of the village. These women help preserve traditional handicrafts and local wisdom. Watch and learn from the locals how to make wicker/weaving crafts, and try creating a cute tiny rice box mobile as a memorable souvenir to take home.
Before saying goodbye to the community, take an afternoon break and try a delicious local dessert, “Kanom-Khee-Maeo,” literally translated as “cat poop dessert.” Rest assured, the dessert is delicious, made with rice flour and coconut, and served with a fresh herbal juice. Learn the simple recipe and try making it at home for your family and friends.
