Be picked up at the hotel between 08:00-08:30 by a local chef, who will lead the way to explore local scenes using traditional modes of transport, such as the songtaew (a local shared mini bus) and train.

Start the trip with a ride on a local songtaew to a bustling market, where you will learn about the ingredients that will be used in your cooking class later. Then, head to the train station for a short, approximately 20-minute train ride to the outskirts of Chiang Mai, towards Lamphun. Alight at a local train station and hop into a van to Saraphee Cooking Studio, located in the lesser-known Thai-Burmese community of Chiang Mai. The drive takes approximately 40 minutes. On the way, you may make a brief stop at a local temple, if desired.

Upon arrival at the cooking home, you’ll be warmly welcomed by the locals and offered a local-style coffee, tea, or herbal drink. You’ll also be introduced to Lanna culture and traditions, such as a welcome set of Betel Nuts (a type of snack traditionally offered to elders), and you’ll learn about local customs from the grandmothers. Taste “Mieng” (fermented tea leaves) and learn how to make local cigars and beautiful flower cones for the Buddha and Spirit House.

Next, take a stroll through the organic garden and pick fresh ingredients for your cooking class with the chef. The cooking will be done in the traditional style using charcoal and firewood, rather than a gas stove. Learn to cook a variety of Northern Thai dishes for an authentic cooking experience.

After lunch, relax with some tea and coffee before bidding farewell to the chef.

Finally, return to your hotel in Chiang Mai by private air-conditioned transport. (L)
