Leave the modern energy of Bangkok behind and experience a sleepy, more traditional Thailand. Explore a labyrinth of canals by boat, soaking up the scenes of local life on the water’s edge and venture through colourful markets reminiscent of a time long-since past.
Pick up at 07:00. Experience a more traditional side of Thailand with an insightful excursion to the capital’s outskirts. Drive away from Bangkok, watching the city’s towering high rises and busy streets fade into the distance as you head towards the peaceful countryside.
After just an hour’s drive, arrive in Samut Songkhram province. Venture to a rural railway market, where vendors set up stalls along the train tracks. This unique Bangkok market offers a fascinating experience as you watch the vendors quickly pack up their goods when trains approach, and then swiftly unload and resume their business once the trains have passed.
Continue through the countryside to Damnoen Saduak. Although one of the most touristy markets near Bangkok, Damnoen Saduak offers fantastic photo opportunities and a unique chance to experience this traditional style of marketplace. See boats laden with fresh fruit, traditional snacks, and various items being sold on the canals. It’s easy to imagine a time, not too long ago, when locals would paddle up to these floating stalls to buy their daily wares. (*Note: Depending on the day, there may be the option of visiting the less-touristy Tha Kha floating market instead.)
For a closer look, hop aboard a paddle boat and navigate through the labyrinth of canals. Pass by houses and small villages nestled along the water's edge, offering a glimpse into the traditional ways of life in this part of rural Thailand.
Return to the floating market for lunch, where you can enjoy people-watching while savoring delicious local dishes.
Continue your journey through the scenic waterways by long-tail boat, stopping to visit a peaceful Buddhist temple off the beaten path. Then, head to the King Rama II Memorial Park, where you can explore its beautifully ornate Thai-style pavilions and learn about the beloved former king. For tours on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays, the day will end with a visit to the vibrant weekend floating market at Amphawa.
After this enriching experience in the Thai countryside, return to Bangkok, filled with unforgettable memories. (L)
