You will be picked up at 08:00. Discover the diversity of Thailand’s neighbouring countries with a full day trip to the Golden Triangle.
Travel to Mae Sai, the bustling trading town at the northernmost border between Thailand and Myanmar. Get a one-day pass to enter Myanmar from Thailand and step across the border into Tachilek. Travel by local rickshaw through town, being amazed at the stark contrasts between the two countries. See men, women and children wearing longyis¸ the traditional skirts worn by the Myanmar people, and thanaka, a yellow-paste that is worn as a cosmetic. Visit Tachilek’s Shan-style temple and explore local neighbourhoods, all the while traveling slowly as the rickshaw driver pedals along the streets.
Return to the Thai side and visit the bustling border market. Browse the stalls selling products from Southern China, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos and rub shoulders with the mix of people who come to shop here.
After a break for lunch, continue onwards to the Golden Triangle where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge. Take a Longtail Boat trip along the Mekong and Ruak Rivers, seeing where they meet to form the ‘triangle’ for which the region is named.
Return to land and drive to Chiang Rai, reflecting back on this incredible excursion through Myanmar and the Golden Triangle. (L)
