This morning or afternoon at 10:00 or 14:00 meet your driver at the hotel and be transferred to The Intan for a closer look at Singapore’s Peranakan culture and heritage.

The Intan is a remarkable Peranakan heritage home-museum nestled in the heart of Joo Chiat, a traditional Peranakan enclave. Established in 2003 by Alvin Yapp, an avid antique collector, The Intan, meaning 'rose-cut diamond' in Malay, captivates its visitors by unravelling the diverse facets of Peranakan culture.

Upon arrival, take a one-hour tour through the Intan to discover the rich cultural heritage of the Peranakan people. There is an incredible mix of artifacts, crafts and other historical items on display.

After the tour, take a closer look at the rich culinary history of Peranakan cuisine. Born from the migration of Chinese migrants to the Malay Archipelago during the 13 century and onward, it’s a fusion of local ingredients, traditional Chinese cooking techniques and European influences. Peranakans viewed culinary skills as a sign of a capable woman, hence driving Nyonyas to become fastidious cooks at an early age.

Meet Michael, a 3rd generation popiah owner, recipient of the prestigious intangible cultural heritage award by National Heritage Board for being Singapore’s last surviving popiah skin maker.  The Peranakan popiah, or spring roll, is one of the most complicated Peranakan dishes, involving more than 20 ingredients and spices! The secret, however, to a good popiah is its skin.

Watch Michael twirl dollops of dough in mid-air and coax paper-thin popiah skins out of baked dough on a searing hot pan. Taste the thin, soft and chewy popiah skins and delight in the hands-on experience of wrapping a popiah!

The visit will end with The Intan Signature Tea & a variety of Nyonya Kuehs (desserts).
