Programme Details
This morning or afternoon at 10:00 or 14:00 meet your driver at the hotel and be transferred to The Intan for a closer look at Singapore’s Peranakan culture and heritage.
The Intan is a remarkable Peranakan heritage home-museum nestled in the heart of Joo Chiat, a traditional
Peranakan enclave. Established in 2003 by Alvin Yapp, an avid antique collector, The Intan, meaning 'rose-cut diamond' in Malay, captivates its visitors by unravelling the diverse facets of Peranakan culture.
Upon arrival, take a one-hour tour through the Intan to discover the rich cultural heritage of the Peranakan people. There is an incredible mix of artifacts, crafts and other historical items on display.
Following the tour, partake in a beadwork session hosted by Cheryl, a 7th generation Nyonya who has been beading for more than 20 years. The fine beadwork seen on slippers worn by Chinese Peranakan ladies were once an essential item of womanhood. In the past, young Nyonya girls were required to undertake beading in order to showcase a girl’s patience, attention to detail and endurance. Involving more than 20,000 miniscule beads, Peranakan beading demonstrates to a matchmaker the signs of a ‘well-bred’ daughter and a successful candidate for marriage.
Experience a hands-on appreciation of Peranakan beading whilst learning the history of this lost craft. Also, admire Singapore’s largest collection of beaded slippers with an opportunity to acquire a pair made by stay home mothers, a responsible project initiated by The Intan.
Following the beading experience, enjoy The Intan Signature Tea & variety of Nyonya Kuehs (desserts).
