Spend a day exploring Medina, one of the two most sacred cities in Islam (the other is Mecca).

Start the visit at Al Masjid an Nabawi, also known as the Prophet’s Mosque which was constructed by the Prophet himself. Marked by ten minarets and able to accommodate up to one million people, the mosque serves as the spiritual centre of Medina. Walk around the sprawling mosque with a guide, learning about its history and significance while admiring the exterior views.

Following the tour of the Prophet’s Mosque, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant with views overlooking the site.

This afternoon, explore more of Medina, beyond its famed holy site. Visit the terminus station of the Hejaz, an historic railway built by the Ottoman empire in the early 1900s. Learn about the railway’s fascinating origins and development, bringing pilgrims to Medina from as far away as Damascus, Syria.

Continue this discovery of Medina with a walk through the city’s bustling central market. Saudis are known for having a sweet tooth and the souk’s stalls are ideal for sampling some of these goodies. When the sun begins to set, visit Mount Uhud, a major pilgrimage site with views across the Holy City. (L)
