With regal palaces, historical sites, architectural splendours and master craftsman a stop in Kuala Kangsar is a must on any overland journey through Perak. Home to generations of traditional craftsmen from keris to embroiders who are commissioned by Malaysian Royalty, to labu sayong makers who craft water jugs found in most local households.

Renowed for traditional earthenware and metal crafts, from labu sayong and keris, all which have been heavily influenced by Islam and therefore most designs are based on natural elements. This half-day tour which can be easily added-on to your transfer through Perak, will introduce you to two traditional Malaysian crafts which keep locals connected to their roots. They both have also helped shape the Malaysian cultural identities.

First, try your hand at moulding a traditional labu sayong using a wheel throwing machine, or just watch as the masters carefully mould or engrave intricate patterns on these beautiful water pitchers. The labu sayong is a glossy blacked coloured gourd-shapes clay jar typically used to store and cool water due to its semi-permeable surface. Each gourd shape takes days to form, fire, dry and then engrave.

After a local lunch journey through Kuala Kangsar to a local forge to meet one of Malaysia’s Keris master makers. Pak Mazin is one of the most well-known blacksmiths and is a fourth generation in his family having forged blades for Malaysian royalty and politicians. Believed to possess magical powers, the keris has appeared in many Malaysian traditional folktales. You will be welcomed into this master’s local workshop to learn about the myths and secrets of this dying trade. With stacks of metal pieces and wooden planks along with bits of wood shaving strewn across the floor, you will learn about the technique of making a keris and see how its forged in his old furnace and anvil.
