This region of southern Malaysia has been an agricultural hub for many years. In the late 1800s, the jungle was cleared to make way for the promising new crop of rubber. For around 70 years this remained the primary crop of the region, sustaining both the economy of British Malaya and, following independence, the newly created Malaysian state. In the 1970s, the demand for palm oil was growing and much of the region converted to this high-yield crop. Some are larger commercial projects, while others are smallholdings for individual families.
Along your ride, you'll see some of these farming areas as well as local villages. You can stop en route to learn about their herb gardens and wild herbs used for the Malay-style salad called Ulam, as well as local seasonal fruit trees such as ramutan, langsat, durian fruit, Jack fruit, mangosteen and chumpadak. There are various routes that your local cycling guide can take, so it can be adapted depending on your preferences. Most routes have minimal time on the road and focus on countryside tracks through plantations, villages or occasionally through a paddy field or along a small river.
On arrival you can discuss your preferences and experience with the local cycling guide to help him determine the best route.
The duration of this trip is around three and a half hours but the cycling time is usually around two hours.
