Travel to the outskirts of Luang Prabang to Ock Pop Tock, a crafts centre on the banks of the Mekong River. The day will be spent here, immersed in the textile scene and surrounded by local artisans.

Before delving into the production of Luang Prabang textiles, it is best to first understand the significance of them in the Lao culture. One of the artisans will share her personal stories of how textiles have played a part in her family’s life, from special religious celebrations to daily usage.

Then start from the beginning by visiting the silkworm farm to learn about the various types of silk made in Lao. Next it is time to dye the silks. Unlike modern factories, the entire process in Lao is organic. Use natural ingredients, many of which are grown on site, to create handmade dyes. Soak silk swatches in the dyes and watch as the vibrant colours reveal themselves.

At midday, break for a delicious lunch of Lao dishes served alongside the Mekong River.

The afternoon is spent learning and practicing Lao weaving techniques. Study the various patterns used in Lao textiles, many of which originated hundreds of years ago. Select a favourite pattern and colours and, under the watchful eye of an expert, weave a small sample cloth on a traditional loom.

As the day comes to a close, return to town equipped with handmade souvenirs and an intimate knowledge of the creation of Lao textiles. (L)
