Laos is a melting pot of local cultures. Get a deeper understanding of the rich diversity that is found within the country with this exciting Luang Prabang trekking experience.

Start with a drive to the outskirts of Luang Prabang to the trekking trailhead. The 45-minute drive passes through lush countryside where vibrant green rice paddies are set against a backdrop of limestone mountains. Arrive at the farming village of Ban Xieng Lom, a typical Laos village, and commence the day’s trek.

Walk along a narrow but well-trodden pathway into the rugged jungle. The path is used by residents from remote villages who come in to Ban Xieng Lom for trading at the market. The route has some challenging climbs but the hard work is rewarded with spectacular views and lush jungles.

During the trek, pass through the Khmu village of Ban Theung. Take a rest here, taking time to walk around and learn about the lives and beliefs of the Khmu people. Return to the trail and continue onwards to Ban Lao Sung, a Hmong village. Although not far apart geographically, the Hmong have very different customs form the Khmu. Lunch will be served in a local home, allowing a more intimate look into the ways of life of the Hmong.

In the afternoon, the Luang Prabang trekking experience loops back toward the starting point via a different path. Follow a small stream through more villages, stopping often for photos or to chat with friendly farmers encountered along the way.

Reaching the car, commence the drive to Luang Prabang. Stop in at the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre (TAEC). After having a taste of the diversity of Laos’ hill tribes during the trek, the museum offers a more comprehensive view of the country’s ethnic makeup through its collection of insightful displays.

Return to the hotel at the end of the day for a well-deserved rest. (L)

Notes:

TAEC is closed on Mondays and The trekking will take approximately 5-6 hours depending on your fitness and the weather conditions. Most of the trekking is moderate but in the middle of the day it is steep and more difficult, climbing to around 700 meters above sea level.
