Explore the lost capital of Muang Khoun situated in central Laos’s Xieng Khuang province. Lesser-known to many, the area is rich with history from its old pagodas of the Phuang Kingdom to bomb craters left behind from the secret war in the 1960s.
Today, enjoy a half-day trip to ancient and undiscovered Muang Khoun, central Laos.
Muang Khoun is the old capital of the Phuan Kingdom and was the provincial capital during French colonialism. This rural centre of faded glory was heavily bombed at the end of the 1960s and bears testimony to centuries of aggression. Once the town rivaled Luang Prabang in glory but today only few ruins remain, such as Wat Piawat.
Discover Muang Khoun’s unique sitting giant Buddha as well of some old pagodas that remain in ruins. The foundation and columns of Wat Phia Wat are still standing as is the 30-meter stupa constructed in the Lan Xang/Lanna period.
Then return to Xieng Khuang.
