Welcome to the Mekong Elephant Park in Pakbeng, Laos!
The half-day tour begins with a scenic journey across the mighty Mekong on a longtail boat, arriving at the shore opposite the village of Pakbeng. The day starts with a privileged moment: an elephant encounter in the forest. The guided trails lead to a meeting with the elephants in their natural environment, offering a rare opportunity to observe these majestic animals up close, as they move and interact within the lush greenery.
After the walk, the elephants can be observed during their daily bath, providing a firsthand look at how they cool off and clean themselves in the river—a truly magical experience!
Next, the tour offers an insight into the animals' daily veterinary routine. The care and attention given by the park's staff to these gentle giants can be witnessed, ensuring their health and happiness. This important time between the mahouts and elephants includes an explanation of the various positive reinforcement training processes.
The tour concludes with a special treat for the elephants, offering them fruits and vegetables as a reward for their hard work. Afterward, the tour moves to the park’s restaurant area, where a local lunch is served in a charming, traditional-inspired setting. The day ends with a return journey across the Mekong to the hotel.
The Mekong Elephant Park (MEP) has recently been certified by ACES (Asian Captive Elephant Standards) and is actively involved in several conservation and education initiatives. These include collaboration with local communities to promote responsible elephant tourism and raise awareness about elephant conservation. The park is home to three adult elephants and one baby, who are given the freedom to roam and interact as they would in the wild. The elephants are not trained to perform tricks or carry tourists; instead, visitors are encouraged to observe them from a respectful distance.
The MEP in Pakbeng is an ideal destination for those interested in learning about and supporting the conservation of elephants in Laos.
