The Old Quarter is characterized by the rock paved narrow roads and lanes and Yunnanese wooden architecture. Most of the quarter’s residents are descendants of Yunna traders. Until the 1970s, there was a Chinese consulate in Phongsaly town, now the Phou Fa Hotel.

Next, head to the Phongsaly Ethnology Museum to learn about the amazing ethnic diversity of this northernmost province of Laos (note: closed Saturday and Sunday). Phongsaly is home to 28 ethnic groups and sub-groups. Each has their own traditional clothing, way of life and traditions.

After that go for a walk up the 822 steps up Phou Fa (Sky Mountain) for a panoramic sunset and views over the city. You will really feel like you are at the top of the world. (B)
