Go beyond the usual sites to discover a more authentic side of Vientiane. Travel to a park filled with eccentric sculptures built by a Lao shaman and browse for traditional handicrafts at a workshop supporting disabled women. These visits will provide deeper insight into Laos’ local lifestyles and traditions.
Step off the tourist trail and see a unique side of Vientiane.
Drive away from the city, following the winding shores of the Mekong River to the ‘Friendship Bridge’ which connects Thailand and Laos. Continue on to the Buddha Park of Vientiane and take a walk amid the 200 statues that fill the tranquil riverside garden. Known as Xieng Khuang in Lao language, the park was built in 1958 by a Lao shaman. The statues are eccentric representations of Buddhist and Hindu legends and seem out of place in traditional Laos.
On the return drive to Vientiane, stop is the Lao Disabled Women Development Centre, a not-for-profit project aimed at improving the lives of disabled women through skills training. Talk to some of the participants to learn about their lives, hopes and dreams and observe their incredible skill at creating traditional handicrafts.
Return to the city centre armed with a new appreciation for Laos and its people.
