Uncover the cultural, culinary and historical importance of bamboo to the Lao people during this informative, interactive experience. Witness traditional bamboo-based handicrafts before learning how to prepare the night’s dessert. Take part in a traditional Baci ceremony followed by a delicious bamboo-themed dinner.
This full cultural immersion begins with hotel pickup to a rustic pavilion next to rice fields. Upon arrival, guests receive a welcome drink and an introduction to the profound importance of bamboo in Lao culture, followed by an optional stop at a local food market for those in the evening session to learn about fresh ingredients. The hands-on portion includes a bamboo weaving lesson with a local craftsman to create a souvenir mat, practicing techniques used for centuries, along with sticky rice pounding in a traditional mortar and pestle. The culinary highlight is an interactive cooking class where guests learn to prepare multiple authentic Lao dishes, focusing either on the versatile bamboo shoot as the main ingredient (soup, dip, steamed in banana leaf) or a traditional home-cooked dinner of 5 typical dishes with local villagers. The cultural experience culminates in a festive atmosphere, which may include a Hmong Khen (bamboo instrument) performance, Kamu bamboo dancing, and a powerful Baci ceremony—an interactive blessing ritual with local villagers to call back the soul and express good wishes. The program concludes with a delicious Lunch or Dinner (made by you) served in a traditional bamboo tray or family style with the locals, followed by a transfer back to the hotel.
