Threads & Harmony: Insadong Day Exploration

TMeet the guide in the lobby and begin the full-day exploration of Insadong. Today’s tour will be by public transportation.

The morning begins at a traditional embroidery studio in Insadong for a Hands-on Korean Embroidery Masterclass dedicated to the art of Korean stitchcraft. The session opens with an introduction to the history, symbolism and techniques of traditional embroidery, discovering how classic motifs like delicate butterflies and vibrant peonies represent wishes for good fortune and longevity. Under the step-by-step instruction of experienced masters, learn foundational stitch methods using fine silk threads and fabrics, completing a personal embroidered artwork to take home as a memorable souvenir.

Following the workshop, enjoy a guided stroll through Insadong’s narrow alleyways lined with antique shops, art galleries, craft boutiques and calligraphy studios.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant in the Insadong area, featuring regional Korean specialities.

After lunch, a relaxing stop takes place at a traditional hanok teahouse tucked away from the main street, where Korean jujube, omija or plum tea can be sampled.

The afternoon continues with a visit to Jogyesa Temple, the spiritual heart of Korean Buddhism. Known for its vibrant paper lanterns and century-old locust trees, the temple offers a peaceful pause and deep insight into Korea’s Buddhist traditions amidst the urban landscape.

The tour culminates at an intimate performance hall for the 60-minute Royal Court Music Performance. The session opens with Gilje, a demonstration of a traditional ceremonial ritual historically performed before royal court events. This is followed by Jinyeon, presenting Joseon-era royal court music, highlighted by gayageum byeongchang, a classical performance combining vocal expression with the gayageum zither. The performance concludes with Harmony, featuring contemporary music interpreted through traditional instruments. A brief hands-on instrument experience may be offered to two or three participants upon request.

Notes:

General Tour:
- This tour is available only as part of a full multi-day tour package.
- Bookings must be made at least 30 daysin advance. Requests submitted after the 30-day cut-off date are subject to availability.
- The tour utilises Seoul's public transport system (subway and bus).
- This experience is not wheelchair accessible and may present challenges for guests with mobility restrictions.
- Travellers are encouraged to bring refillable water containers to minimise plastic waste, with refilling stations accessible across destinations.

Hands-on Korean Embroidery Masterclass:
- Participants must arrive 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. Late arrivals may result in a shortened session.
- Participants must be able to safely handle an embroidery needle and maintain focus for two to three hours; the activity is not recommended for children aged 12 and below.
- Rates may vary if optional design upgrades or premium alternative materials are selected on-site.

Royal Court Music Performance:
- Minimum capacity is one person; maximum capacity is 15 persons per session.
- Performance times are scheduled daily at 11:00, 14:00 and 16:00, but remain closed on public holidays.
- Seating is non-assigned and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Audience members must be seated at least 10 minutes prior to the performance start time.
- Entry and re-entry are strictly prohibited once the performance has commenced.
- Photography and video recording are permitted provided cameras and devices are set to silent mode.
- Food and beverages are prohibited inside the performance hall.
- The performance is open to all ages. Infants aged 12 to 35 months may attend free of charge when seated on a guardian’s lap, whilst children aged three years and above require a valid ticket.
