Meet the guide at 07:00 in the hotel lobby. Today’s tour will be conducted in a private, air-conditioned vehicle with a dedicated driver.

Depart early for a journey of approximately 2 hours to Cheorwon, a region near the border with North Korea that offers a rare glimpse into the history and tensions of the Korean Peninsula.

Begin the exploration of the Cheorwon Hantangang River Columnar Joint Road, a natural marvel formed by ancient volcanic activity. Stroll along the riverside trail to admire dramatic hexagonal rock formations, sculpted by lava flows over millions of years, now offering a peaceful setting steeped in geological wonder.

Then, enjoy an early lunch at a local restaurant featuring regional specialities.

In the afternoon, embark on a 3-hour guided exploration of the Cheorwon DMZ, a lesser-known but historically rich area of the Demilitarized Zone. The visit begins at the 2nd Underground Tunnel, discovered in 1975 and believed to have been constructed by North Korea in preparation for a surprise attack on the South. This tunnel, carved through solid rock, provides a sobering glimpse into past military strategies and ongoing tensions.

While driving through the DMZ, keep an eye out for crane birds, including the endangered red-crowned cranes. Revered as symbols of longevity, purity, and peace, their graceful presence offers a poignant contrast to the stark landscape.

Take the monorail up to the Cheorwon Peace Observatory, perched on a hillside and offering sweeping views across the DMZ and into North Korea. From this vantage point, gain deeper insight into the enduring division of the peninsula and the fragile peace that continues to shape it.

After completing the DMZ tour, conclude with a visit to the Goseokjeong Pavilion, a scenic site nestled among cliffs and riverside woodlands. Rich in folklore, this area was once the hideout of legendary Korean general Im Kkeokjeong. Explore the traditional pavilion and soak in the panoramic views before returning to Seoul.

Arrive back at the hotel in the late afternoon. (L)
