Get a hands-on appreciation for the centuries-old craft of Kyoto ceramics at a highly regarded pottery factory in Uji. Bring home the very clay from this charming town in the form of a personalized ceramic piece shipped overseas after being fired in a historic kiln.
Make your way to Uji, a riverside town just a short distance from Kyoto Station. If arriving by train, a short walk brings visitors to the pottery factory, located on the banks of the beautiful Uji River.
The venue for today’s activity is a historic ceramic company that has been operating in this location since the early 1600s, when the popularity of the tea ceremony exploded and high quality bowls were in great demand. The kiln had strong connections to the first generations of influential tea masters and is has long been one of the most respected producers in the area. Today, they are still known for their beautiful works, which rely on the clay from a nearby mountain overlooking the Uji River.
Check in at the company’s shop and gallery and be led to the workshop venue. Join an English-speaking staff member who will instruct guests how to use a potter’s wheel and work this legendary clay. Guests will create two pieces (bowl, cup, etc), giving them time to get a feel for the wheel and make two separate designs as they like.
The finished ceramics will be fired in the factory’s kiln and mailed overseas. (This may take several months due to firing schedules)
After the workshop, wash up and head out to explore Uji independently or return to Kyoto city.
